Japanese camping always manages to surprise. So regulated. Here, people typically just go hiking in the wilderness, go to the forest and camp there or go by boat to the archipelago. There are "campsites" here as well, but they are usually for camper vans (because they need some infrastructure..like roads and paving), and are not really considered proper camping. Camping is something you do with yourself or with your family or friends, with no one else around. To get away from regulations, rules and structure. And other people.
