Whenever I pick this up again I forget that it's kinda gotten more dark and anxious. Whenever I think about it I think of cute fun cat stories, but no it goes into a lot dark headspaces, and it always blindsides me

It feels kind of divided to me. There are a lot of signs that Yuna is a deeply troubled person, seemingly on the verge of a complete breakdown. But that storyline is interspersed among a bunch of silly slice of life stuff, so it constantly feels like it's building up to something that never arrives. I'm sure part of that feeling is just the slow release schedule, and some of the author's other works are also pretty slow paced. I bet reading Girlfriends month to month as it was released was incredibly frustrating.

Milk Morinaga throwing in unnecessary drama that's actually not really a problem? No way. Still my all time fave yuri mangaka though :p Oh, and thanks for the upload translators, perfect way to end the weekend.

pretty hard to stay invested in this drawn out angst that stems entirely from lack of communication when the last chapter came out... 9 months ago. i love a lot of things about this but the publication schedule is strangling it.

I’m not so sure that the release schedule is a major issue here. Your idea that “Yuna is a deeply troubled person” seems closer to the mark. Events that should clear up misunderstandings and make Yuna feel better about their relationship seem to have the opposite effect, and her desperate attitude toward Rena’s “working from home” (or not) plan seems both erratic and excessive—Rena’s learning that there’s more to running a business than just setting up the gear at home is very reasonable, but Yuna seems to think that the issue is entirely about her.

Since Morinaga Milk is such a consummate fluff queen, it’s easy to forget that she’s done some pretty dark stuff as well (anyone remember Mare?). She’s never actually mixed the fluff and serious angst in a single series that I can recall, but there’s always the possibility that she’s doing it here.

I have a question about this one part of the dialog that confuses me.
In the last panel here:
"that now I'm so sure anymore" -> "that now I'm not so sure anymore"
Since that's what she confirms on the next page's panel?

This isn’t cute or hot! Yunas only top when they’re very distressed!

But getting to see Rena’s brain melt from gay was great

Your pets are always judging you. But they let a lot of stuff slide.

I think it’s interesting how Yuna uses sex as both a carrot and a stick in this relationship. Rena is just horny.

I think it’s interesting how Yuna uses sex as both a carrot and a stick in this relationship. Rena is just horny.

She thinks it's the only thing she has to offer Rena, which is related to her barely-hidden self-worth issues. At least, that's how I remember it, along with Yuna feeling guilty for wanting sex on her own, because then it somehow doesn't "count" as her giving something for Rena's sake. Or something like that.

And that kinda feeds into her irrational worry that Rena is going to cheat on her, because Yuna assumes that if she's not around Rena constantly, Rena will realize how "worthless" Yuna is and leave her. Whereas Rena has been pretty clear, both in what she's said to Yuna and what we've seen of her internal thoughts, that she loves Yuna a lot and already feels very fulfilled in their relationship.

It's definitely getting pretty dramatic with Yuna's slow-motion breakdown and Rena's obliviousness to it (not that I'm blaming her for not noticing, since Rena is actively hiding her own insecurities and doubts), but bad communication and one partner being blissful while the other is freaking out is pretty much a Morinaga signature, so it's not unexpected.

rena just thinking horny stuff meanwhile yuna thinking all possible problem of the universe while doin it. waiting for them to learn the most important key in a relationship which is COMMUNICATION.

welp despite all the drama I'm still happy we happen to see yuna top.

I kind of remember Kisses, Sighs... being that way, but it's been awhile since I read it, probably time for a re-read.
Also, always made it a point to not read Mare

"So, I see you really wanted coffee and a croissant. Why didn't you just say so, instead of accepting tea and tsukemono?"
"Well, why did you say you would go drinking with your co-workers? It's like we don't communicate to some sort of supernatural degree, causing absurd, painful problems for our relationship?"
[both are thinking heavily]
"OH GOD WE"RE IN A MORINAGA MILK MANGA!"
next chapter: they go to a couple's counselor that Yuna thinks is far too cute.

Yes, I consider Kisses way superior to Girl Friends and it annoys me to no end that it seems like almost nobody read it stare.

I had honestly not even heard about it before I saw it recommended to me after buying Girl Friends. Will have to get around to buying it someday as well, if the vacuum in my wallet ever allows...

Also, always made it a point to not read Mare

I mean. It's not Ulysses and most of it is just excuse for sex and violence, but I personally liked it and didn't think it was nearly half as bad as people make out it to be. If you can't stand het, rape, violence or all of the above in your story/porn then it's definitely not something for you, but other than that it was actually decent story that ended with yuri.

I think Sweet Lips was enough of that for me.

In fact, I'd say Girl Friends had way more angst than Kisses. I guess it's probably because Kisses is way shorter so they had to be more focused and get to the point faster, unlike Girl Friends that spend way too much time on stupid misunderstandings and both characters angsting about liking girls and thinking other person doesn't like them, before actually hooking up near the end. Yes, I consider Kisses way superior to Girl Friends and it annoys me to no end that it seems like almost nobody read it stare.

Girlfriends and Kisses are the only two manga I have physical copies of because they were the first yuri manga I ever read.

I wish Kisses was more focused on just Nana and Hitomi instead of the other random couples because personally I liked them more than Akko and Mari. Gfs spent so much time with them trying to figure out how to have sex or whatever, kinda weak lol.

And Nana actually had a spine beneath her bottom personality.
