This is may be the only wholesome story by this author though. All of his other works that I've seen are gore horror or gore porn.

welp, thanks for the info. I was about to look for other stories by this author, but I won't do it now that I know that lol.

Well, unless you like gore. The author is good at what he does.

I have a question about something I’ve seen elsewhere. So here:

https://dynasty-scans.com/chapters/mai_no_mushigurashi_ch33#6

When Mai is washing Nana’s back she says “does this hurt?” I’ve seen characters say the same thing in the same situation in other stories.

My question is, is this the same as asking “do you hate it” about something the receiver should enjoy? As in, the giver is seeking validation that what they’re doing feels good for the receiver and the giver doesn’t actually think what they’re doing doesn’t feel good. Or, do Japanese bathers typically use a rough exfoliating cloth that might actually hurt?

I was in an Asian grocery yesterday and saw a lot of exfoliating cloths that are quite scratchy. So I wondered if this was the case.

This is definitely going down as one of my all time favorites not just in terms of Yuri manga. The story was so chill, grounded, emotional and entertaining all at the same time and managed to not make me hate bugs so much which I would say is pretty big acomplishment. Words really can't describe how much I enjoyed reading through this, would recommend to anyone who likes slice of life style mangas.
10/10 lovely story with the best of vibes
Lol it's a shame that all the authors other works are apparently gore/horror which are like my two least favorite genres.

Chapter 3: “She’s a parasitic freeloader good for nothing”

Chapter 4: “She’s a beautiful lounge singer with a massive fan club”

When I tell you this got me hooked when I realized the two main girls were actually into each other. Truly a Blessing when a yuri manga isn't actually bait.

Pretty unusual setting (I don't think I have ever read something that focused on plants and farming. There is yamada and kase but that focuses waaaay less on technical side of things and is more about flowers etc), good development with developing proper backstory to most characters. Add some drama and this was actually a very good read. 10/10

Wow, how is this not more popular. Its such an emotionally deep story, one of the best I've read.

I was a little skeptical of this manga to start but it definitely won me over. I do think the fan club was a bit much, there was an element of sleaze that I could've done without. Still, I loved how naturally the relationship grew, how it wasn't the focus of the manga but a nice piece of it. And I do love when a manga has a 'thing' the author clearly does research on or cares about, like Collectors with books & fashion, Ano Koro no Aoi Hoshi with marine life, this one with bugs. Always fun to learn a little about something while reading.

You can see the horror roots of this author in the scenes where the boundary of life and death become thinner: the grandfather's imagination of his wife, and Nana's struggle with consciousness on top of the mountain. Paradoxically I appreciate as another commenter said how well they manage to keep destructive bugs from seeming disgusting, and bring out all of their behaviors in an interesting and neutral way. The side part about fan clubs and idols does seem out of place, but I think that's the beauty of an author putting together the different things they like into one work. What tender relationships they all have, both platonic and romantic.

Lovely story, but I don't really understand anything that happened before it started.
So in the begin, Raika says that Mai and Nana both aren't from the town, however later Mai is shown to have gone to the same high school as the cook in the Italian restaurant? Doesn't that sort of imply that they are both from the town? Also, it is never really mentioned how Mai and Nana even got to know each other, apart from Nana seeing her on stage. I guess they met as part of the "fan club"?

Also, Mitsuha is some kind of ghost, isn't she? :D

Are these the lesbian farmers taking over the countryside that all the right wing people on the radio keep talking about ? 'Cause I'm pretty fine with it honestly, they're doing a good job and they're freaking adorable :O

Why did Nana's grandpa have two different funerals? There was one pre-cremation in chapter 16 and one at the grave site in chapter 31. I'm not very familiar with the particular customs around this, so explanation would be appreciated.

Dont know much about Japanese burial rites but surely you have a first practicle funeral- you cant be leaving people undurried for long after all- and it would be a small private deal for just close family- but then you have a formal funeral that the extended family and friends all attend- that is a much bigger deal to set up and presumably takes quite a while to arrange everything.

Thats my guess anyway.

@OnitsukaTiger It's probably the same as the thing where when doing someones hair the person in back will ask 'Does it itch / hurt?' something like that. I think it's a standard question asked by hairdressers and the like to make sure they are not causing any discomort for the customer- and you will often see people playfully ask the same thing to their friend or whoever they are combing the hair of like they are playing being a hairdresser.

This might be the same thing since she is personally servicing her in a similar manner- washing her back/hair.

@BreadBunny With the various little details we see and things she says and the literal magic that would be almost impossible to do otherwise- Im guessing Mitsuha IS a deity of the land- like a minor mountain deity who doesn't have much power given she isnt worshiped any more.

This thing is brutally realistic at first, I love it. (Especially the first volume) Unfortunately, even if the relationship of the main cast feels natural, I dislike where it went. I wish they would have just stayed friends - even if they move together. Another thing is the black haired girls past. It kind of came from nowhere and crashed into blonde girls arc, and its resolution is a far stretch. But all in all, especially the focus on bugs, is really nice. The first volume especially!

Love that the cast of characters for the farm lesbian manga includes a wealthy heiress, a mad scientist, a wetlands god and slightly sinister bartender, I’d play this version of Star Dew valley

Actually thinking about it this is basically a stardew valley romance arc from the perspective of the love interest lol

A great read. I love the down-to-earth feel it has. I always like when there's some sort of educational aspect to something I read or watch, and this manga blends that aspect with the story perfectly.
