Okay, seems like I need to break it down: a kinder egg is a hollow chocolate shell wrapped in foil. Inside the egg is a small, yellow, plastic capsule that contains a toy.
The eggs are sold one by one, but you can get them in boxes of three. But even then, there's still a toy inside each egg.
It's really not complicated.

I'd suggest at least skimming the chapters leading up to the school trip. Getting a better picture of Tomoko's life and personality makes her changes all the more satisfying.
Plus it's fun to see how early you can spot characters in the background who later become important.

The authors earn a hat tip for their foresight in making random background characters just distinctive enough they can be readily spun up into more prominent colourful cast members as needed/desired.
