I'd suggest at least skimming the chapters leading up to the school trip. Getting a better picture of Tomoko's life and personality makes her changes all the more satisfying.
Plus it's fun to see how early you can spot characters in the background who later become important.

The authors earn a hat tip for their foresight in making random background characters just distinctive enough they can be readily spun up into more prominent colourful cast members as needed/desired. I've seen some feral!Marianne x Hilda pictures where she was very... you can say aggressive about her sexual desire and to be honest i kinda liked it. The artist explained it because of her crest and it was something else than the other dozen pictures of those two with Marianne being shy and passive.
