I thought the same thing. A record of slow deep breathing (like the breathing of someone who's asleep) can help you relax. Listening to it, you end up unconsciously synchronizing your own breathing with the one in the tape, and that is bound to have a relaxing effect. Shima could have explained the "weird noises" like that, very easily.
