I like that Kotone is acutely aware of the fact that she has a lot of power over Aoi and doesn't want to, even unintentionally, abuse that power. It feels like a lot of stories with this sort of power disparity ignore that issue or act like the less powerful partner being some degree of on board with it or attracted to their boss eliminates the problem. Though, to be fair, the way a lot of them also include some degree of reversal does help.

The Watsonian answer is probably some combination of depression, the trash being softer than concrete, and the trash pile being out of the way. The Doylist answer is that it provides some very clear symbolism for both their mental state and how society sees them.

tbh the way i read it was just she got literally beat up (probably by some collection agency goons) and they tossed her into the garbage when they were done beating the shit out of her. Also a very common trope.

I think it is their first original story. I can vaguely remember a statement that "nekokorone" would be their name for original works, but their twitter account under that name has gotten suspended for some reason, so I can't check. It also makes it hard to find if they've done anything else, but this anthology was released in January this year, so not too long ago. Hopefully we'll see more soon!

Yep, it is! I misremembered the starting plot being similar since it's been a while since I last read it.

I've read Corpse to Corpse, so I guess picking up a beaten woman in an alley next to trash bags is common trope in yuri. :D (Cynical Dog, Corpse to Corpse, and A gift from the rain)

I see, thanks for that information! It’s definitely weird then that nekokorone got suspended on twitter though and I hope it gets restored or whatever or that they can make a Bluesky account or something like that. I’m glad that this is a recent anthology though so I’m looking forward to seeing more good stuff like this.

Also, I went back and read Cynical Dog and it was pretty good. I did read it when it came out years ago, but I forgot about it until now, but it was definitely good.
