Forum › The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy At All discussion
Dense as I am, I'm still struggling to get my head around the idea that stories featuring two women in a physical romantic relationship might be "burying the gay."
I do agree with the underlying idea that if yuri stories had one of the main characters be a male, they would be het stories instead.
At no moment has any character explicitly raised any questions about liking someone of the same gender. Only about being different.
A distinction without a difference. To be queer is to be different/the other. Not every message has to be as subtle as a car crash to be understood.

If you were to make both characters in hetero stories the same sex they'd be queer stories.

The only important thing I got from this whole unnecessary argument is that We need more sex to avoid communication !
I'm glad someone is brave enough to state the Truth

That’s right! Reciprocity is amazing!

If I had to guess, it's one of the most popular yuri manga of the last few years, which means lots of people want different things from it, which leads to lots of discussions here.
As a sometimes participant, as frustrating as some of the conversations can be, I much prefer this to when no one is talking about something I'm reading, or if the only thing people say is "I love this chapter", like 90% of the comments under Webtoons. Especially since this is a forum, if we're not discoursing, whats the point?

For as long I have used this forum, almost all threads have a “typical dynasty comment section” comment. it’s the forum tradition

You mean you won't like it if I start my comments with "I'm here at the speed of---"

As long as you end every comment and every chapter with talking about how peak it is

But being different isn't being queer.
Different taste in music, in clothes, in language, in skin color...

Sometimes they're funny but after a while...
Mitsuki is butch coded. Aya is femme coded. But they're not "lesbians" in the "real world" sense. Which is why so many people see them not as a lesbian couple, but as a typical straight couple with a twist.
I just read a bunch of "typical straight couples with a twist" in this month's yurihime release. They should probably change the name of the publication.
Apparently there are "correct" ways to be queer now, got it. I'll double check with my local queerness office to see if my boyfriend and I's relationship qualifies or if we lose our Q cards
I was being sarcastic. The rest of my comment, I thought would make that clear. Unless I'm misunderstanding your comment and you're actually just adding to mine. Otherwise, your comment is funny and I agree with it.
Ah fuck, I rage baited myself. Shit.
Well, I'm glad you found it funny, at least

They were funny the first few times I saw them, but after that it just got annoying. Especially when those comments almost always got TC.
It's like, the most crazy stuff could happen in that chapter and the top comments are just basic stuff not even talkin about what's going on

I agree 1000000000000% on this.
I appreciate it wayyy more to see people talking about the series. The whole point of having a space to discuss is to share our thoughts on what we read, I'd rather see on topic, series related comments than people just yappin to yap like they do on Webtoons.
Cuz at least I know y'all getting upset and stuff actually care about and are locked in to the story

aaahhh the good old days of constant bitching, debating, arguing, raging, baiting, speculations, assumptions, and everything and nothing in between. aren't we so lucky to relive the same old traditional forum discourse like we always have.

Even if it bewilders me to read some of the things I do in the threads here, it's refreshing to see people take the story seriously. It's cynical to think everyone has bad intentions with the things they say, sometimes people are truly just bad at wording what they mean. It's just a matter of how much mental gymnastics I'm willing to do on a given day.
Also yeah this is really such a simple story, but it's so popular that it has gone beyond the typical yuri reader crowd, it has even gotten some people to start reading yuri, so I'm not surprised it attracts so much discourse both here and in other places. At least here, nobody is being a doomer about a completely imaginary cheating/breakup arc (other than the jokes).

Yeah talking about stuff is fun, especially when done on forums meant for talking about stuff.

Think people is also missing the point of how this plot becomes a paralel of Joe and Kanna-san story. Both girls look exactly the same as younger Kanna (Aya) and Joe (Mitsuki). The girls will part ways from the relational patterns. Specially Mitsuki and her uncle who essentially raised her the way she is
"The guy she broke up with wasn't a guy at all"
I appreciate everyone's points on how relationship conflict is common, how high school sweethearts rarely make it into adulthood, etc. etc.
That's the problem though. This is common, and since it's common and we're all familiar, it makes for a boring and tedious story to which we all know the predictable endings. They have differences, they either work it out or they don't, they either break up or they don't, and if they do, they either get back together or they don't.
The key is if the storyteller is able to tell the predictable story well, and so far this is just a turn of the crank. Communication issues. Emotional needs not being met. The introvert unable to break out of their shell to save their relationship. Relationship inexperience. A shallow relationship based on one common interest that causes the entire relationship to collapse if it's not there 100%. There's little in the way of novel insights or storytelling here, and little to distinguish this story above its peers.
I hope to be proven wrong, but be honest: are you ready for the slog of a breakup arc? Week after week, 4 pages at a time?
The final act: they are separated. Mitsuki picks up her guitar again and writes a song. But for who? Who is the song for? A despondent Aya somehow ends up in the cafe during open mic night. And who's that on the stage? Oh! it's Mitsuki! And she's singing a song that expresses everything she couldn't say with words! Aya is flooded with emotion, eyes wide with green pupils. She's rocketed back to the first time she walked in the shop, that special connection with the "guy".
And.... scene.
