Angst....so much angst...I liked the style of the story tho, how it led up to the reveal/conclusion...

There's a wordplay between Umi (firstname) andt the sea (umi). In the first panels, she says "I love the sea", but it's ambiguous ("Umi ga suki" ?).

I'm sure there's something about Ryou too. The wordplays are kinda lost in translation.

It's well done, though somewhat confusing.

Edit: okay, found it : 鯨 means "whale".

"So I dressed up, thinking why not." doesn't seem to be the most committed mindset for a marriage interview to me but I think the outcome is given away by Ryou failing to reach for Umi.

Now I'm a sad panda. (the pandas won't come back anymore)

Hard to follow, but the art is lovely.

Too beautiful for words... but also too sad. I liked how it started out as if it was an unrequited love story about Umi -> Ryou, but turned out to Ryou -> Umi instead. Then again it might've been mutual but unexpressed, and just died on the path to the marriage meeting. T_T

I read it like 4 times, the two first to understand, two more to appreciate that soft feeling of angst, the pain of unexpressed love.

The wordplay is neat. The art is neat. The abstraction and paneling make it feel like a film. Really happy I read this.

This is such an underrated one-shot, I always end up having it re-read to fully understand the work play and take in the art, which is so delicate yet visceral and heart-wrenching. The problem with unrequited love is that though they make for beautiful stories, you wanna yell at the characters to JUST CONFESS. Especially when it really does look to be mutual. It’s not like they’re never going to meet again, so hopefully Umi pushes forth on her feelings since Ryou has given up. But this is just wishful thinking on my part. Anyways, this also has one of my favorite pages of manga ever (Pg 23)
