I don’t think the mangaka meant to imply what they did with the color patterns on Kaede and Tomoe at the beginning chapter 8 but headcanoning that Tomoe doesn’t remember Kaede’s name because she recently changed it alongside her gender marker from now on

yeah, I thought that part was weird as well. That and a couple other things makes me think Mariya is a slightly manipulative character: even now she tries to change Koto’s goal of becoming independent into her job, and the “so they lied to you?” line seems like trying to distance Koto from her new friends. I’m hoping this will be a character arc she goes through.
I mean, Mariya does make good points on Koto not just relying on her friends, but those reasons are just being used to hide her possible ulterior motives. Hopefully, she'll learn to let go of Koto and treat her as an equal
