I am unsure of what to make of this.

I think it's meant positively. Like "when I was younger I wasn't moved by this. Now, I am (I'm a year or two older) and Mimika, who's much older than me, is much more moved by it."

Am I the only person who finds this story a little sad? I am totally rooting for these two, but the best ROMANTIC solution (cooling off their friendship and staying mostly apart for a few years) would be pretty hard.

Yeah, but the sad things help build the romance, and the stakes are what make the story engaging.

High risk, high reward: Mimika and Yuzumori make it through this uphill battle and truly earn their "good end", or it all goes down in flames. Either way, it'll probably be fun to watch.

Yuzumori is in desperate need of emotional, familial intimacy. Mimika could try to fulfill that role by acting as a sister-like figure, but at the same time her romantic and sexual attraction towards Yuzumori won't be going away any time soon. If Mimika tries to be her sister, things will most likely end catastrophically.

Mimika, don't be sensei.

Maho wanted a lover and needed a parent. Sensei couldn't decide which one she wanted to be, and in trying to become both she ended up becoming neither.

Ideally, IMO, Mimika stays as Yuzumori's (platonic, for now) lover, and somehow helps Yuzumori cultivate a familial bond outside their relationship. That can be by reconnecting Yuzumori with her mother, or finding a close friend outside home e.g. a classmate or teacher at school.
