When the thing that's gross is being in love with a girl and NOT it being about wanting to bang your blood cousin... Gross.

Homophobia and society constantly being a cause of internalized homophobia sucks. As for cultural differences around cousins, I'm not going to go around calling other cultures gross for it. Especially with the amount of times I've seen people be super racist about it.

It's not a cultural difference thing. Even cultures where it's "normalized" (oftentimes via arranged marriages), people think it's gross too lol. People are not blind to the close similarities between relatives, even children. But this is not real life, it's a story. So it doesn't matter, you like what you like and you dislike what you dislike. Anyway, moving on.

From the first chapter, I got an impression that Yukari is aware of and comfortable with herself liking girls, but I don't think she has ever indicated that to Shouko, which is why Shouko is now afraid that Yukari is grossed out by her same-sex crush.

Yeah Yukari has been keeping that information to herself, and I think this situation is easily resolved by Yukari saying something along the lines of, You think you liking girls grosses me out? Ha well I guess you never caught on that I fell for you at first sight!

Seems pretty unlikely, and I've never seen any anthropological evidence of that.

Incest within the immediate family (direct descendants, siblings) is pretty much universally abhorred, apart from a few royal families pretending to be gods. Incest beyond that is entirely a social construction, like attitudes about what kinds of animals are "gross" to eat.

Yukari definitely needs to come out quick, before we get half a dozen chapters of Shouko trying to pull away because she doesn't want another straight girl crush.

I hope we get a "I don't think it's gross because I like a girl too", sweeping her crush on Shouko aside (cuz it'd be rude to confess to someone who just had their heart broken), which then causes Shouko to try and figure out who it is Yukari is crushing on. Maybe add in some surprised feelings of jealousy to get balls rolling

Does anecdotal evidence not count then? I grew up in West Asia with friends who were being encouraged by their parents to marry their older cousins, usually it would happen to the younger girls. It was normal for them, we didn't question it at the time either, being we were what, 12 years old. But they still didn't like it. In any case my point is people aren't monoliths, and every situation is not black and white. Just because something is cultural/"normal" or tradition doesn't mean the situations surrounding it are good. And whenever it comes to this discussion I think people don't truly understand what makes incest "bad". It's not just because they are blood related or because of biological defects in offspring, it is because of the abuse and grooming that allows incest to happen in real life. Which is why I loathe when people bring up real life incest to either defend or bemoan fictional incest. It's a story, nobody real is being hurt - that's why it's okay. We don't have to play the morals game here.

calls cousin marriage gross
says we don't have to play the morals game

Culture can change; I've read younger Japanese people find cousin marriage gross when older generations didn't; this could easily be cultural change (e.g. Western influence) rather than some revelation of inherent human preferences.

As for your West Asian example, there's an obvious difference between "you may marry your cousin if you fall in love" and "you should marry your cousin, whether you like him or not". The second one is gross for reasons unrelated to 'incest'. The Shouko/Tenri case does not involve grooming.

There are other variables too; cousins raised very closely almost like siblings would more likely trigger the Westermarck effect and not actually be interested in each other, vs. ones raised with more distance at early ages.

I feel like this needs some consideration. Now that we know, it feels very targeted and intentional that the author pointed out how although everyone calls them siblings, they've only known each other for something like a year. They effectively don't have a familial relationship aside from being informed they were cousins, so irregardless of whether or not it's acceptable or gross for her to I feel like it's just not that deep. She's a closeted teenager, suddenly this very cute girl (who is apparently her cousin) is very in her life, and she's crushing on her. I feel like the "you think it's disgusting don't you" angle can be for both the homosexuality and the familial connection personally.

"You're a troubled soul with a surprising number of issues"

Yeah that's an understatement with this girl.. Though to be fair that's any angsty gay high school girl.. Or was that just me?

I really love Yukari she's such a precious gem I didn't expect her to be so level headed when this series first started. Because she did seem like she had a huge ego. She said she doesn't know why she's so nice to her I thought she already realized she was catching feelings a few chapters ago? If not that's gonna hit like a truck when you realize you're in love with someone that wants some cousin lovin for at least a little bit longer.

Thank you for the translate and upload guys/gals <3

Ok, good. This chapter confirms that Shouko's major concern is being gay, which is not really surprising, but it's especially nice to see that Tenri isn't her first love. I was a little surprised Yukari didn't come clean about liking girls as well, but in context she might have thought it would have been the same as confessing. At minimum, Shouko knows Yukari is an ally, and if she's smart she'll pick on why Yukari might be an "ally".

I'm 90% certain Shouko's friends don't know that she's gay, and 100% certain Tenri doesn't know because she wouldn't be that cruel, so I wonder if they'll misinterpret and be suspicious of how close Yukari and Shouko suddenly became.

Also very curious where the next chapters are gonna go since the main secret on Shouko's side has been revealed, and Yukari is not confessing any time soon. My only guess is that Tenri's sickness feels like a Chekov's gun situation and there's gonna be some drama and misunderstandings down the line when Tenri gets sick again.

Did they even ever specify they were first cousins or not?

I'm reminded of Mushoku Tensei, where Rudy and Eris used the term "cousins" even though they were in distant branches of the same family.
