This is tmfly (Tamifull)'s first work since the completion of So, Do You Wanna Go Out, Or? (How Do We Relationship?) earlier this year. See this Tweet from tmfly with links for where you can purchase a digital copy (only ¥880) and support her!

Will I ever write a manga any time soon? No, Was this useful? Yes, Will I be reading this because it's made by Tamifull? Absolutely!!!

I was confused as to why a “How to” book was on dynasty but then I saw the author. Given the high regard I put HDWR in I’m definitely going to give this a read.

I think HDWR is brilliant and will inspire future works, and it's cool that Tmfly is giving advice with something like this as well! I'm definitely curious, thanks for sharing it!

So input is important because consuming a large variety of content will make it easier for you to come up with fresh ideas, as well give you an understanding of how to format/plan different kinds of stories.

That's a lot of movies to watch while making a series lmao

Though it makes sense that she wants to get lots of ideas that will help further inspire her to create.

This is just really good advice for creative stuff in general, lol.

Reminds me of what I heard at a writer's conference a couple years back: That the two most important things for a writer are to keep writing (no matter how bad it is in the first draft), and keep reading other people's works. Movies and games also help with getting a better understanding of narrative flows, but they said that reading was the most important thing.

Perhaps it's mentioned in a later chapter, but the important thing about consuming input is not just snorting media like cocaine, but doing so consciously and critically. The same way riding a bike for commute or recreation won't make you compete in the Tour de France (that's what doping is for) you need to put conscious effort into your "training".

And for a personal addition: also pay attention to what other media does badly, so you can avoid the same mistakes. And I don't mean watching wanton agenda-laden "analysis" channels on YouTube (=pundit commentary, masked the same vain that colourful mascot packaging makes little kids brush their teeth) but use your own judgment and scrutinise your conclusions (can you find counterexamples? What did they do different? Most rules are rather guidelines.) Even if you never end up writing anything, you'll learn a lot about your own preferences and strengthen your media literacy.

Experience is vital for any kind of creative work, but that doesn't just mean your own experience: standing on the shoulders of giants is also valid. The more you embrace, the better you become at embracing it.
