Reminds me of what I heard at a writer's conference a couple years back: That the two most important things for a writer are to keep writing (no matter how bad it is in the first draft), and keep reading other people's works. Movies and games also help with getting a better understanding of narrative flows, but they said that reading was the most important thing.
