She's choosing not to contact Asumi. She knows she can connect but is deliberately waiting to be found instead. I think this part is forgotten or missed sometimes. It affects how I view the prospect of their reunion (and her character honestly). I forgot which chapter(s) she discusses her thoughts. She's barely in the series and her cameos are very short, so it's easy to miss.

Also remember that Mai saw Asumi in chapter 5 and hid from her. She's known that Asumi's been searching for her for nearly the entire series. She also knows some of the girls Asumi has slept with. She's just hiding basically. I guess the idea is it's supposed to be romantic? I don't see it but that seems to be the rationale. Compared to that, I can't help but be team Nanao (losing team that, that is).

Just finished a reread of the whole thing, so here's a few thoughts.

1. Asumi is a natural lady killer. Just pure lesbian catnip. The most unbelievable part of this story is that she went all the way to college without getting a girlfriend.

2. Nanao endgame. That girl fell HARD, and it feels like Asumi could really return the feeling once she has her other business taken care of.

3. Mai really needs some closure too. Poor girl has pretty much obsessed over her memories of Asumi all these years, hopefully she'll get some release soon.

I wouldn't be surprised if that happened regardless of any misunderstandings. Sure, her character profile (Volume 2 Extra, page 11) says she's a TOP-leaning switch, but according to Jun she is said to go "meek" when she's with younger women, i.e. people reminding her of Asumi (chapter 5, page 10-11). And since meek can also mean something like "patient", I chose to look at the JP text. The original says "よわよわ" which seems to mean something like "frail" or "weak".

Also I think people are being a bit unfair towards her. Reaching out to a customer could get her in trouble with the company (customer privacy violation), even if they were friends (10) years ago. Though the fact they were friends could have additional negative side-effects for the business, as the customer might stop showing up due to being "scared off", or becoming a FWB of the employee. Escort work appears to be Mai's main source of income, judging from her ability to just go to Tokyo on a whim, unlike Serina who has a day job. (Speaking of who, I hope she gets a happy ending too.)
Personally, I assume Mai's inaction (even disregarding work) to be less about wanting that "magical reunion" after being randomly booked by Asumi and more just due to being afraid of said reunion. Revealing that you have become a sex-worker, to someone who looked up to you as a child, probably doesn't feel great (especially considering how prostitution isn't technically legal in Japan], even if that person makes use of such services. Also no, Mai doesn't know that Asumi is looking for her, if anything she seems to believe that Asumi would back out, if she realised her partner to be Mai (chapter 6, pages 5 and 30).

Also, this is somewhat besides the point, but I forgot how much Sayaka tries to get something to happen between herself and Mai. I remembered the pocky-joke in Extra 1, but I didn't remember her dressing up to look younger (so she can help Mai with her "meekness") in chapter 6 and proposing to do a threesome with her in chapter 8.
