I actually sincerely dont think its a cliff hanger, and i dunno if it was already discussed on here but they mention being in hiding, i dont really understand what that means, like maybe just hiding on twitter. But the whole post today about hoping to finish the comic and saying thanks for watching ofer the characters makes it sound like something behind the scenes is going wrong.
Like posting a 5 years from now drawing before a comment like that seems kinda foreboding, am i the only one worried.

Something behind the scenes like what? Personal stuff? Social stuff? Sumiko has over 500k followers because of her recent work. I understand Japan is conservative when it comes to LGBTQ issues, but hopefully not to the point where she needs to go into hiding?

She didn't say she "hopes" to finish the comic. She just said she's taking a week break, thanked & apologized to the fans, and posted the 5 years from now comic to give people at least a little bit of content. It's not the first time she's taken a break, either. There's no reason to be worried other than the "how much longer is she going to spend making a manga she gets no money from" concern which has been there since the beginning.

Also we all know the real reason she's taking a break: to give this thread a chance to cool off and settle down. Thank you, Arai-sensei.

The series is tagged Romance, so in contemporary understanding this means a love story with an emotionally fulfilling or optimistic ending. It has been a long time since Romance was defined by tragedy.

Would say it's a pretty strong "hint". Shopping with female friends -> we all carry our own bags; shopping with girlfriend -> likely me carrying all of them. So from that aspect alone, would very much see it as a couple ending.

Your understanding is very wrong. Japan was long ahead of most Western countries in many ways, especially transgender rights. The only thing really lacking now is marriage equality, but it's more "when" than "if" - the public is in favour of it, but democracy is a slow-moving system designed to preserve the status quo, so legal change takes time.

Notably, Japan is not a Christian country. While there are many people that are indifferent to LGBTQ rights, the percentage of the population that rabidly hates gay people is significantly smaller than countries where ~half the population define their lives around a 2000 year old book that tells them to stone the gays.
