for any of y'all that still haven't seen this show, i strongly recommend it! the opening alone is insane visually, but it's a very fun (if incredibly cheesy) action flick. did i mention that this show is beautiful? the animation is just chef's kiss

I think I heard somewhere in a pre release interview that the show isn't meant to be a yuri show, but there honestly isn't a heterosexual explanation for anything they've done so far.

I've seen similar comments used to mean that it's not yuri first and foremost. Like, there might be yuri elements, but they were primarily focused on other aspects when working on it

And, yeah, they seem to be going out of their way to portray Chisato as being into Takina

to be fair if we only count ones where there is an explicitly romantic kiss on screen between two female leads there have been about 3 yuri shows made ever

Kind of, but Chisato's personality is a convenient shield. She's super sweet and loyal. So almost anything she does outside of just either sexually making advances on Takina or directly confessing is "dismissable". That said, the way Chisato lifts Takina in episode 3 is literal romantic trope. So who knows where they'll go with this.

As for the yuri in anime that isn't just romance, I was positively surprised by another anime original, Birdie Wing: Golf Girls Story, that wasn't tagged as yuri but turned out to be quite "on screen textual", if you will. I'd really like more nice, unexpected turns like that in anime.

You kinda confirmed it yourself already with the latter statement, but I wouldn’t take the words of an author/director/creator without a grain of salt. Yuri is niche and openly advertising a series as “yuri” can be detrimental for sales. Thus concepts such as “subtext” and “queer coding” exist, so we essentially get varying levels of yuri content without the label. Take nana for example, it is known as one of the most popular shoujo manga in japan, yet nana and hachi are gay as fuck

Oh, I'm fully aware. Honestly I was sold on the premise of "cute girls with guns" and I'm fine with that. The fact that I can watch the whole thing with yuri goggles on is just a bonus.
