Here's a 90sec demo of the enhancements. You can see how the layout is affected at different display widths, etc. I made the long reader toggleable, but I didn't add a button to the UI to toggle it. For this demo, it just turns on automatically when it detects a long strip. I disabled the code to change the location hash, because I think it was triggering an existing listener to scroll the page to the top on page change -- that's why the URL isn't reflecting the current page.

This isn't an official response since I'm not involved with the site's development but if your continuous scroll mode for long strip chapters embeds all images at once, it's rather unlikely to be considered. Bandwidth is one of the biggest considerations for site development from what I've seen and embedding all images at once would bypass the caching they already do. (Though admitted I say this as someone who has a script that adds a button to each chapter to cache all pages myself due to my isp sucking. I'd prefer to just wait 10-15minutes to load all the pages of a chapter than to have to wait 30-60 seconds to load the next page when reading.)

It doesn't embed all the images at once, it loads them two ahead as you scroll. But the specific timing of when images are loaded is trivial to change. It's as simple as creating a cooldown with setTimeout if you want to prevent a user scrolling to the bottom and loading everything at once.

Did more work on the long reader thing over the weekend, still hopeful someone will be willing to integrate it with the site.

I ran the demo with throttling enabled and cache disabled to best demonstrate its operation. The reader now does three passes on the page rendering, with the last two passes occurring simultaneously (to the extent possible):

1. Generate the <img> elements (could be done server-side before page is sent)
   
2. Populate the <img> elements with client-generated placeholder images to prevent reflow when reading
   
3. Load the requested page(s) according to the location fragment

Final page loading now happens in a "bubble" around the requested page#, in the following order:

requested page --> succeeding page(s) --> preceding page(s)

The number of pages it preloads after and before the current page is configurable. For the placeholder images, it uses a hack to get each page's dimensions (E: which is why you see it starting+aborting download of every image), but if it were integrated with the site properly that sort of thing could be cached on the server side and sent with every chapter request. I didn't show it in this demo, but the layout is still compatible with different display resolutions, layouts, etc.
