The vast majority of doujin artists don't make their money back at events, let alone enough money to cover the months of time spent working on the doujin. It's a hobby, not a job.

I see it as an investment. This experience will help not only for a single convention, but for the rest of her professional (if she continues to be a mangaka) and personal life.

@Anjelika From the little i've seen suggested in various anime/manga, most circles that are established, who can be fairly sure they will sell all the stuff they print, will for sure make the costs of printing back, AND money towards future costs. I think only new unkown artists/groups are maybe not going to cover their costs at first.

I agree though they dont make enough to cover all the hours they spend making the doujins- not at what you would consider an acceptable wage though- and that for all but the biggest, it cant be a full time job.
