Besides yuri, I seriously no longer invest my time reading other genres anymore, but I second

  • Fullmetal Alchemist That shit is so well written everyone should have read it

I've read a lot, but I can't really recall anything tbh, but maybe a handful? Note that I probably didn't finish these, there was a time I just stopped reading and well, dropped everything.

  • Death Note
  • Gamble Fish
  • Liar Game
  • Jin
  • The World God Only Knows
  • Psychometrer Eiji
  • Inuyasha
  • Assassination Classroom

My all time favourite, hands down, whether I remember the plot or why I liked it or not, is FMA. Everything else I only have some sort of vague recollection of, and at least remember that I liked enough to have been up to date for some time.

Edit: I have no idea how to do the black dots in front fml
Edit: it worked out im good

Basically anything by Junji Itou. Especially Uzumaki, Hellstar Remina, Black Paradox, and the Tomie stories. (Also his retelling of Frankenstein is pretty interesting.) Also Franken Fran. Now that I think about it I think everything outside the yuri/romance genre that I've read is actually almost entirely horror, lol.

Don't read Elfen Lied.
It just hurts, physically, morally, emotionally, everything. If you do read it, and commit to finishing it, you just end up with disgust, sympathy, pity, sorrow, cringe, horror.
In a way, it's really good, but at what cost? Ofc, I read it when I was in 6th grade, totally inappropriate for me at the time, but I actually read the whole thing because well, you just can't let it go. I imagine that you'd either drop it a few chapters in, when you realise that half the pages you'll see are basically limbs flying, gore, and on a few occasions, concerning x antagonist(s), rape and definitely human cruelty, apathy, (maybe you read it til a point when you can decide to take a break and never actually come back,) or you actually go and read the whole thing and just feel broken and sad.
It's so conflicting, Lucy is def the biggest anti-hero. It's just all so tragic.
Hm, if someone decides to go read it, I won't stop them, and I'd be down to talk about it as they do, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone just like that. It's really intense. You go into it because you want to, out of actual, personal interest. I never even bring it up, I don't even remember it until someone mentions it, and then I just hurt and cringe and internally die. Elfen Lied is quite a ride.

Anime is way better. It is my all time example that manga isn't always better than adaptation. Second half of manga dragged too much and plot was making even less and less sense. There is like only 1 good scene in second half but it is barely worth getting through manga to read it. Also anime did mankind a favor and cut most annoying character in entire series. Is anime less violent and depressing? Not really. It just works better, has better pacing and in general tells a really sad, but cathartic story. If you focus on story rather than bad gore animations and nudity, it is really touching. I watched it several times, one time not that long ago and I still think it holds up even now.

I will be honest. I dropped Elfen Lied becuz it was too depressing, sad, emotional and tragic for me to handle. Wvery time i jump on next chapter, an emtionally traumatizing truth is revealed.

Lucy was way tooo innocent to be introduced in this manga.

I really can't deal with all of those thing in one manga. But since it was the goal of mangaka to make reader feel that way, thats why i said itm's one of the best.

The thing I remember most about Elfen Leid was that other girl, the one who kept losing limbs, who seemed to have been created just to be hurt over, and over, and over...

Yes. Lucy took out all of her limbs and left her like that. She comes back with prosthetics, and her not being used to controlling them with her vectors and dropping them sometimes was used as a gag, which... was pretty horrible/dark.
"All" Diclonius we saw were like, young-looking girls. Sure, people of all ages and genders died, but when Lucy faced other Diclonius, well. You see a lot of little girls die.Oh, and there was this rapist bounty hunter (?) guy too. There was a lot of horrible, cruel, repulsive people.

I haven't watched the anime, but I remember looking it up, wanting to find out the variations. I guess that if you want a simpler, cut-short version of the plot (tip of the iceberg), go for it. But I don't regret having read it, and if I had to choose, I'd probs still read it. Lucy is a really tragic character. As cringe and horrifying as it was to watch her slaughter so many (a lot of times they were innocent bystanders), she's probably the character I cared about the most. Sure there were others I hope wouldn't fucking die, but hnng... Lucy...
I remember when years later, I realised that her real name isn't even Lucy. Her actual name, the name she had when she was a child was Kaede. That fucked me up and made me feel so sad.

Tbh I still resent the death of that one friend she had for one day, when she was a kid. She gave up her freedom and went with the men because they said they'd save her (gunshot wound) and she still died.

Huh, I didn't realise she could send people flying without dismembering them. Well, she didn't often spare them I suppose. I didn't realise it when I was younger but there seems to have been subtext between the two, so I'm rereading that chapter, ouf, this is gonna hurt tho.
Edit: It hurt. It was way more dramatic and tragic than I had remembered. Also, seems like she vowed to kill off everyone in the life of the shooter/man responsible. That's kinda amazing, that among all that hate inside of her, there was also the desire for revenge for that girl. It was never previously mentioned, but she still clang to that memory. I suppose that it's super important tho, she traded everything she had for her life
There you have it. Remembering Elfen Lief p much consumes me.
