ookami is wolf, okami and ogami are both (multiple) different words, depending on kanji. All of which, including oogami can also be (family) names~

That's a really fun detail, actually! They use the same kanji... sort of!

Her surname is 大神 / Oogami, made up of 大 / ō meaning "great," and 神 / kami meaning "deity." In her surname's reading, the "k" in kami becomes a "g" through rendaku, as Giftnova said, giving us Oogami.

So while it's not the Japanese word for "wolf," 狼 / ookami, her surname, 大神 / great deity, is actually believed to be the origin of the word "ookami." Since wolves were worshiped as mountain deities and divine guardians, early Japanese literature associated these kanji with them. You'll sometimes see wordplay like this used for mythical or divine wolves in media like Capcom's Ōkami, whose Japanese title is actually written as 大神.

So that's why Haru has so much wolf imagery like her cute lil fangs.

Also I just love Haru and her energy and trying to change and be confident. I really don't like Myuki at all but she doesn't seem as bad as I first made her out to be when she first showed up.

And well her mom did notice Yuu was there and she seemed happy? But that doesn't change that she basically abandoned her and left her because she thought she had no talent for singing even taking her sister with her making her feel like she was worthless.

Ngl i dont understand why manga are addicted to making characters do very unreasonable things (like abandoning your daughter) and then chickening out when it comes to making them face any significant consequences for it. We'll see how this series deals with it but based on what we've had so far (like her sister going "im not handing her over" after being out of her life for years????) im not super hopeful.

I feel like it was fated to be hand-waved all the way back in chapter 5 when Yuu explains her past to Haru. She even allows that Haru (and the reader) might "probably think she's a terrible mother", only to go continue with "but...she's still my mom, you know?"
so I don't really think it smart to expect Yuu to hold either her mother or her sister accountable for their actions. Sure, Miyuki's blameless in that she was taken away by Mom as a child, but I went back to look and found nothing about them maintaining contact over the years that they were separated, and now Miyuki's acting like she's entitled to come in and take Haru's place next to Yuu. And, Yuu says herself in that chapter that it lead to her parents getting divorced, which means her mom effectively chose the "talented child" and abandoned her family to push that talent to fruition. It's just toxicity all the way down, and everything we've been shown, including Haru's reluctance to confront others over conflict, makes me think Rurika and Miyuki's behavior will be excused.

Doesn't feel good at all. So I just hope that Haru & Yuu thoroughly kick Miyuki's ass in the finals and make it absolutely clear that the mom fucked up all those years ago in neglecting her daughter. So when Yuu invariably lets the two of them into her life sans restitution, at least Haru and Yuu know they succeeded on their own merit.

Miyuki antagonizing Haru really doesn’t motivate me to see Miyuki get any closure.

Moving on, at least Ruriko recognized her own eldest daughter. Though her reaction was lackluster, so I hope we see more of her POV to understand what’s going through her head.

A bit worried the story isn’t going to address the whole abandonment issue. It was pitched to us as a traumatic moment for Yuu. Like, girl saw herself as the reason her family was destroyed. Really hoping to see there being a payoff to this.

I think I've just partly given up on this series because of the above. I don't expect a good enough resolution to the conflict between Yuu and her family (mostly mum)...

She just has to make out with her girlfriend in front of her family to assert dominance and show she's living her best life without them /halfjoking

I'm starting to get Jellyfish vibes with how they're handling another awful mother.

Have some mixed feelings about the series right now, and it's all about Yuu's family dynamics. Kashikaze's art is the best it's ever been, Haru is great as always, but I think the series has been a bit messy ever since Ruriko and Miyuki became actual characters. So far, there's not enough time to share between the main trio and Yuu's family, so they don't get as much development.

I honestly wouldn't really mind if Yuu forgives her family. Since Ruriko was kind enough to comfort a random crying child, she can't be an absolutely awful person. But, I want it to be earned. Yuu clearly harbors a lot of trauma from the divorce, Miyuki's essentially harassing Haru, and I don't want all that to be handwaved away. I'd be pretty disappointed if Yuu just accepts them back into her life.

Kashikaze has proven to be a bit cleverer than what her premises suggest at first. I wasn't expecting Miyuki's nepotism to be brought up later on, but it was. She also made Sora's mom from Lonely Girl, so I know she can write a character who's difficult to forgive (if not impossible in Sora's mom's case). I hope my worries are proven wrong.

Someone needs to give that sister a wakeup call. Being worried that the whole thing's rigged because the person running it and acting as the main judge is the mom of one of the competitors isn't cowardice, it's basic logic. She abandoned most of your family to work on your music career. Obviously she's going to be biased and the whole thing is unfair. Also, no, she only has one daughter in the competition. She abandoned Yuu and still hasn't bothered to contact her. ... And I just had a vision of how they could try to excuse her behavior: She realizes she messed up or, worse, she's just to embarrassed to talk to her daughter after so long and doesn't know how to approach her.

I will be so mad if they take that route and hope the author is better than that.

I'm going to disagree with that outcome if only because it still validates her behavior, she just chose the wrong daughter when, really, abandoning her husband and daughter like that would have been messed up even if the abandoned daughter had no musical aspirations and just wanted to be a librarian. Yuu's value isn't solely tied to her success as a musician and that what needs to be driven home to the deadbeat.
