oh my lets not be petty
How am i being petty?!
could be sarcastic. like you're actually the only petty one when you're trying to calm things down by elaborating on what you've meant.
instead of someone who, say, barged into this forum that has its disagreements and discussions but still mostly have been civil, called the work that many people are enjoying "transphobic schlock" and implied that everyone's indeed not much different than a bigot.
I got the bonus prize of becoming not just a raging transphobe but ALSO a racist for trying to match the energy of this douchebaggery with some snark. what followed was name-calling and laughably obnoxiously condescending lecturing.
And we can wait and see just fine
hear hear.
Now, if you think trans lives are just an advanced form of crossdressing then dear god you need to educate yourself. the fact the manga is letting you conflate the two demonstrates it is clearly is laundering transmisogyny under the guise of "we made them sexually appealing though!1!1!1!" it is quite the opposite i think this manga would prefer transgender identity never to exist or be invoked from how it already framed kitano, it would spoil the "joke" that Girly has won their affections, it spoils the fantasy thats laid bare by every boy-in-panty shot in here. The plain reading is they are almost exclusively sexualized either as a joke or purely out of fetishization. There was an immediate crass joke about genitalia being incompatible with womens clothing in the first few pages of this chapter, remember? I'm surprised you forgot!
I'm not conflating transitioning and crossdressing, this series has both and right now it's the crossdresser who's catching flak. Deservedly so, he's ignorant and kind of a jerk, but he's also fifteen years old. Getting mad at him is counterproductive. And trying to extrapolate from this one character to the author's secret agenda is just a failure of media literacy. Because you know what's going to happen next chapter? He's going to learn a lesson and become a little less ignorant.
I don't think there's anyone at all who believes Eru is actually correct with his upskirt inference. So next chapter this other guy is going to get his skirt off and, oh, you actually can wear those panties regardless of your undercarriage. Maybe we'll even get a servicey explanation of tucking. Because that's the level this manga is actually operating at. If it's not covering these topics in the same manner you would, fair enough, but that's really leaning into the narcissism of small differences.
There's plenty of problematic stuff going on here. It sure does have a panty shot of a child right there, doesn't it? Gender identity makes no difference in the ethical calculus of fanservice. And the manga's entire premise of a find-the-vagina comedy is utterly radioactive. If anybody want to nope out on that stuff, I can't blame you. But trying to argue that this obviously pro-trans, thoroughly queer, series is doing it the wrong way and therefore contemptible? I can't get behind that.
Y'all the manga is like four or six chapters in. Give it some time, this might turn out to be one of those cases where the main character is a repper.
it has 32 chapters total which has all already been released in Japanese, too.
it's somewhat axed judging by the author's post prior to ch32's release but I hope there would nevertheless be a wholesome and satisfying wrap-up and that Kitano & Girly can be happy, together or otherwise.
fingers crossed for the former though X)
God, Kitano is just such a cutie.

i guess bruh, i'm just confused cause none of us are being bigoted whatsoever but ofc some get heated.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Kitano chapter, but yeah, it seems to rapidly be devolving into the pervy harem, objectifying high schoolers, type of manga I initially thought it'd be. Oh well. Can't say I'm surprised.

I think that SillieHonka's concerns are more than justified and it doesn't sit right with me to be treating another trans poster like they're crazy for correctly pointing out a transmisogynistic trope and not being happy about it just because you didn't like the language they used.
I absolutely did not like the language they used and I treated them like the asshole I perceived them to be.
I understand there's a sentiment for some people online that as long as your cause is just & your heart is pure you can simply insult anyone and everyone around you and if they did not like that then they're simply a lesser community member or ally who crumbles and defects the moment their little feelings are hurt and I just do not agree with it.

Honestly, outside of the very combative attitude and accusations. I agree with a lot of what they said.

I'm a trans woman too. I don';t know if Honka's concerns are accurate or not, I was merely saying "we are still early in the manga, we should see how things develop". I am merely saying we should be cautionary, because I have posted stuff like what she said before, and was proven wrong by later chapters in a manga.
She could be right, this manga might be transphobic bullshit, but we should wait and see before hurling insults at everyone here.
SillieHonka has a right to their opinion and a right to not like the manga, this is true.
Coming in with asserting 'transphobic shlock' and 'you wanna fool yourself' makes them look like a troll, though. Literally insulted everyone that doesn't have the same interpretation of the manga as they do.
Way I see it, Kitano has been presented as sympathetic this whole series, and Kitano has issues with Eru's behavior. Girly has been presented as good natured, but also ignorant, and he also seems uncomfortable with Eru's "plan." This looks like a setup for Girly and Eru to learn a lesson, through the vehicle of crass comedy.
I'm happy to discuss other interpretations, just not with someone that's going to insult me over it.
Edit: I also want to add the context that I am a trans woman and, while not strictly a lesbian, I usually identify as transbian because I've been in a monogamous (albeit open-to-poly if she ever finds someone) relationship with another woman for over a decade.

If when someone implies that a work you like may be transmisogynistic (which, again, it comes with the genre) you react by shutting them down while making them seem crazy, as another trans poster, that makes me wary of you. What was the purpose of your reply other than to make fun of them because of a hypothetical ally who could feel alienated by their post? I think trans people, especially transfems, need to be afforded more patience than others.
the purpose of my reply is to call-out a rube behavior that I perceive as not acceptable. there's plenty of ways to present this opinion that doesn't involve in insulting everybody else. I truly believe there has to be a reasonable middle-ground between groveling pleads and condescending insults one could talk in, maybe even lean towards the latter if you want but just don't fully go all in to that side.
this reply makes it seem like you are one of those people who thinks that, like I've said, "as long as your cause is just & your heart is pure you can simply insult anyone and everyone around you and if they did not like that then they're simply a lesser community member or ally who crumbles and defects the moment their little feelings are hurt." but perhaps I'm wrong in this assessment. again, I disagree with this line of thinking.
still, at least you are trying to be respectful and I can at least try to appreciate that. you can think of me however you want, that's not gonna change the fact that I will continue to do no harm towards the community, unless you consider me defending myself thus as doing harm.
as for the work itself, I think there's no other reasonable reading for Kitano than that she's a trans girl especially from what I've read in chapter 2, in spite what the author would've intended (be it from preference, ignorance, or outright bias). even though I selfishly more wish to see genderfluid characters in works like this (even though that's probably even further from the author intention) who can be comfortable in either presentations. on a side note I also read Crossplay Love because of this but it's increasingly obvious that Hanae's also very trans-girl-coded (which, good for her, I mean there's literally no other way to read the line to her sister "you're lucky, you can be a girl all the time" as anything but that. (on a side-side note that work is also pro-trans and queer and contains much less or perhaps none at all of the vulgarity this one contains)). way earlier in the thread I was just trying to defend the fact that we as fans can try to interpret these how we want especially if it doesn't come from a place of bigotry.

I have noticed a tendency in queer media discourse online (and this is explicitly not limited to trans topics) to label everything that does not conform to an impossibly sanitized image of "good queers" as inherently offensive. Ironically to some points argued above, that image has been created for middle class cishets whose somewhat liberal socioeconomic background makes symbolic "allyship" worth aspiring despite them being frankly uncomfortable with greater queer culture. But like with everything about people, being queer is a messy (and sometimes outright gross) affair.
I do not know for certain, but I deeply suspect this tendency comes from either self-esteem issues (i.e. lack of pride) or internalized queerphobia (possibly from hanging around the aforementioned group). Which makes me wonder if those people would survive, say, The Rocky Horror Picture Show... Anyhow, if that hypothesis holds, the solution is as simple as touching grass, though I acknowledge that depending on where you live, the causing irl isolation might not be self-imposed.
And as always in media discourse, there seems to be an inverse relation between the sensibility of a take and the self-righteous insufferability of its proponents.
Anyhow, I do wonder how people made it 4 chapters in when the protagonist is literally gynophobic and the premise of "out people against their will" was there from the very beginning. If that's not your cup of tea, fine, but only complaining now about how everybody else here is apparently either wholly unreflective or a cryptotransphobe makes you look ... rather selective in what you take issue with.
So "don't like don't read" and let the rest of us capable of differentiating characters from their author enjoy what is shaping up to become a journey of self-discovery about a boy with his heart in the right place learning to revise his world views.
@girlswhokiss
I'm sorry. I know you don't want to engage anymore, but for once I do actually want to apologize. (I still do fervently disagree thought, but this is not the time for that). I am guilty of the very same shit (generalizing) I complained about. I fucked up, and frankly I don*t know how to better apologize.
If it's worth anything, I wasn't targeting anything at you, but SillieHonka, who has been guilty of the very same privileged slacktivism we both agree to despise.
As stated before the fire I have for other people comes from watching this pattern over and over. For the record, I am a trans woman whose favorite trans manga is Uniforms at 19, so I don't have this high sheen plastic perfection demand of representation, though I will say titles like "I want to be a cute anime girl" I will state do have their place for example (boring as those might be). My heat coming for others is just based on how hostile and destructive this genre has been for others like me and myself personally and for the resultant "community" or evolution of crossdressing into "femboy identity" and alllllll the transmisogyny involved with how 'tr*p" morphed into that term without any real examination of the transmisogyny underlining it across social medias. I think a lot of people forget the recent history there, even the "nazi femboys" which persist still, and have attempted to salvage—what to me amounts to a calculated wave of transmisogyny in the fash breeding ground that animanga has been in the last decade and a half—something against their own interests. To me it feels pretty clear when a transfem author is playing with crossdressing/femboy tropes like Sisters of Dorley or if a cis(?) author is truly listening like "Love Me for Who I Am" which excusably stumbles on the language. This manga is careening down a grassy hill in comparison. I don't want other trans people in the place I was 13 years ago, reading things like Prunus Girl and Boku Girl and trying to derive themselves or project onto media clearly interested in preserving cisness (the former less so iirc) and heterosexuality and trying to inoculate the reader against the idea of transition, dysphoria, or trans identity. I know I am a little misdirected and not being kind and patient to my younger, closeted denial self or people in a position similar to that. I know everyone has their internalized shit and yes, the fact that I gave this a chance past the first chapter is evidence of myself holding onto internalized shit in some degree. My message was primarily aimed at trans women.
Do I think this one is like, as bad as Boku Girl or other GB/CD titles, no not yet, but I think on its face the premise is barely removed from something you'd see in an h-manga (a whole other can of transmisogyny worms). That's the other part is it is doubling down on this idea that passing is easy, given its so impossible to accomplish a successful reverse transvestigation. I's been said that in this genre, especially when it has juxtaposed ugly caricatures that do assert womanhood, that this treats trans women that pass as a fantasy and those that fail to do so as a moral failure (though that part isn't in as much play given curly attempted to undesrstand, but I'd argue his character is "morally dubious, well-intentioned teen") . At it's worst, not exactly healthy stuff to put in your head but at it's best isnt as reassuring to me personally. I can totally see this manga going through dysphoria inducing reveals of "hidden masculine traits" of their girls like with the balls thing to the affect of communicating that passing is an artifice, but not in a positive or affirming way as in like most of "passing" is bullshit but passing has at least a significant role in safety. Back on the title though, a troubling formula seems to be emerging with: x character still has y, therefore not the "real girl", even if regardless of the fact that it could try and reprimand after, I don't think that's efficient or respectful storytelling to be, here's error in gratuitous detail, here's course correction, then we do it again the next two chapters. It is how kitano went and its how people defending this setup around freaking balls are perceiving it to go. I can't help but see it as the manga equivalent of quote tweeting transphobia to your trans followers. It's a destructive anger-feeding habit that I will admit still has hooks in me. It is different though when a presumed cis author is doing it though, as opposed to it being something we do to ourselves. I just dont want anyone else to go through it and thats so stupidly ironic. Darth Plageuis the goddamn transsexual.

why the hell we be writing full on paragraphs on paragraphs
Because these are important things for people. When I first saw your puerile simplistic comments sneak on the site I honestly thought you are a bot. That would be more interesting than what you are.

that hurts man i just dont like writing full paragraphs. lets not be mean
Ok that backstory doesn’t make sense, and it’s boring. I do feel the “I love my Mom and would die for her” energy because me too, but they could have hired someone to replace the mom or Eru could have cross-dressed to be the Singboard Girl lol
But the whole thing feels lame, I hope the author made the other girls backstories better
jesus basically every character in this besides (mostly) the main 2 are completely insane. i hope there’s somehow a message of “actually its bad for high school boys to behave like rabid dogs at the slightest hint of a (‘real’) girl” by the end of this. potential for greatness or for the absolute worst dreck of the genre
This chapter kind of lost me. Girly keeps on insisting Eru is actually a swell person with no evidence just so Eru could tell his tragic backstory that make no sense as motivation for crossdressing.
Lesgo!!! Kitano best girl !!! >w<
Where could this story possibly be going. As expected the peeping bit was stopped before anything happened, but what is this tragic backstory + demon cameo lmaooo.
Considering this whole mess I'm assuming the upshot is gonna be that Eru becomes the poster girl himself or something to help his mom out? And somehow a demonic pact factors into this lol.
Revealing the singular "real" girl seems to me like she'll be the next one to get an arc? It seems like the main thematic throughline, for as much as there is one, is still "girls are regular people with interiority too, dont get so caught up on gender that you become unable to interact with other people". Which for a gag manga isn't too bad
I don't quite know how the idea of Eru himself being the poster girl has never occurred to him despite him crossdressing already...? When thats almost definitely how this scenereo is gonna end lmao.
Also it doesn't surprise me at all this artist could pull out such a perfect rendition of the realistic horse mask lmao. I do like the extreme solutions Girly has been going for; he always is fine making himself the butt of the joke if it means he can help someone out. He's such a sweet kid fr
Also also, i love the drippy eye look that Kitano's got in this page.

It could be a styalized teary eyes, or nervousness like a sweat drop, but I'm kind of taking it like an extension of the makeup remover she's holding, where her sanity or willpower is being melted away... whatever the meaning is it's just a cool visual

kind(?) and intimidating horse
okay yeah no that backstory was really quite nonsensical -. - hopefully there'd be more compelling ones for the other classmates down the road. like Girly's backstory was great, exaggerated per this manga's style but still reasonably believable and compelling -- the sources of his drive to find love.
it's kinda ironic after all the arguments revolving around this work for it or against it only for the next chapter to be this much of a dud, with nothing else problematic (ok well there's still the panty shot thing from last chapter) besides just really a meh story.
still rooting for Kitano & Girly though, idc idc.
the Chekhov's make-up poison is definitely gonna be used, just hopefully not intentionally by Kitano, c'mon, please
also thanks for the fast translation (and all your work as a whole) ElPsyKongroo! it's only been 3 days since the last chapter! (not remotely suggesting/requesting that you should keep this pace btw :P)
im laughing, we really put so much heat on this for this chapter to be so lackluster and a nonsensical backstory what da hell. i really really hope this goes the right way and doesn't end up really being transmisogynistic cause then all you transfems here are allowed to hang me for my hopeful comments and for pissing anyone off, i'm fine with it...
