It's not pandering. They're just correcting what should have been done in the first place, considering the ship's popularity before the anime.
Also, S1 had some low key moments between the two such as this and this.

Compare that to how much more open they are in S1E1. They've grown much closer (and clingier) offscreen, which is a shame since we missed the development.

This is just barely related to the topic, but I felt I'd risk accidentally starting a ship war if I posted this on Dynasty Café, so...

If people mean Maki is best paired with Nico and Nico with Maki I agree. But the other big pair in LL! is clearly NozoEri, and that's good. Because, otherwise, you will see a lot of NozoNico. NozoEri and NicoMaki are very compatible ships. Post-graduation, it will be increasingly hard for them to stay together, though. Nico is a poor, struggling idol wannabe with kids to take care of and Maki is an only child, rich, studying to get into med school.
