It’s funny how from a similar premise to arioto this gets so fucking different so fast. It does take itself way more seriously and that’s probably a good thing.

That last panel of Sendai at the end is peak, I regret ever doubting this artist.

I like the premise and the weird distance the two have for now, but after 9 chapters of nothing but buildup and tease, the eventual payoff had better be at least satisfactory. Maybe I'm being a bit impatient idk

I appreciate Miyagi's motive behind teasing Sendai, and that's the one thing that has been developed relatively the furthest, but it moreso drags things rather than intrigue me

It is a very, very slow burn and very introspective. Worth picking up if you want progress to be difficult, non-linear, and character driven - that is the payoff itself per se.

The characters can also be a bit opaque sometimes even if they may sense consistently. Neither is very honest with themselves or great at their own motivations.

Miyagi in particular can seem unsympathetic or weird. She actually makes a lot of sense to me though - Sendai is legit strange and Miyagi wants to keep her at bay, as outside of Miyagi’s room Sendai comes across as super artificial / fake. I’m not even sure Miyagi’s behavior is teasing, and a lot of the action so far is initiated by Sendai.

My read, minimal WN spoilers:
Miyagi does have abandonment issues from her Mom’s departure and quite a bit of insecurity. This translates into a desire for control. Sendai is relatively safe for Miyagi because Miyagi’s views her through the lens of control. Miyagi can issue orders and push Sendai aside emotionally on her terms.

She can try and piss off Sendai into leaving and not view that as a bad outcome as long as she, Miyagi, is the one initiating such an event. If you have hangups about abandonment and control, forcing someone to hate you may feel safer than exposing yourself to be abandoned…

One thing that adds to this is that Sendai is actually a people pleaser and really quite fake with her school friends. She goes with the flow to maintain her status. Miyagi really loathes and does not trust this part of Sendai, and only likes Sendai when Sendai is in her room. This is also the only time Sendai (for her own reasons) feels safe and comfortable and more expressive.

The other side and tension to this is Miyagi’s own attraction to Sendai, which strains Miyagi’s sense of control.

As someone with substantial control issues I appreciate this dynamic.

The payoff is great, but very slow. What you're seeing with this arc is typical. There was a huge buildup, then all they accomplished was that they will still see each other despite them being in new classes and in a different year. The small achievements add up over time.

In US terms, I think it just depends on where you are. Never heard of them going for apartment dwellers, but if you have an apartment of higher income people with a nice buzzer system maybe you would try going through the different units to see if anyone would talk to you.

I can't remember the last time I heard about someone going door to door to sell their knife kits and doorknob cleaners, but you could still get requests for donations or boyscouts or girlscouts selling their wares. In a couple different localities, I used to get Spanish language Jehova witnesses, who would still give their fliers and tell me to scan the QR code.

There's also two different ways of handling utility companies. One the companies can establish a defacto monopoly by controlling the infrastructure and who provides your utilities is determined by where you live. The other is more of a free market system where different utility companies compete for you to buy through them, who then pay the owner of the infrastructure. This is similar to how you can get a cheaper cell phone plan from a third party company that uses the towers of one of the big three. In the second systems, the companies do employ solicitors to try to get people to switch.

Fewer people than in the past will answer their door if they weren't expecting anyone, but I wouldn't say there are no solicitors in the US.

There will always be Door sale people (Unless they managed to change the world/society for the better in 200+ years later where door sales person job is extinct)...People who are desperate enough will always be willing to take those annoying jobs sadly in all counties to make money lol. But yeah like the comment above said...You usually get more commonly like donation asked or maybe internet provider service sales people along with other random stuff sometimes I guess?
