Ah, attractive people with friends pretending they have "anxiety" because they had a slightly bad day. Is this tumblr?

Where are you seeing anything about her still having any friends? Or that any part of her anxiety is manufactured and not an actual disorder? Or confined to a single day? And what does being attractive have to do with it? Good-looking people can't be mentally unstable?

People have been shitting on her for just being lazy or overreacting since the series first got released on Dynasty. Though I'm kinda surprised there are still people being idiots who can't understand others this late in the series. Those people largely just disappeared after the first couple of chapters when they were proven wrong.

Apparently if you're attractive and/or have friends that means you couldn't possibly have any problems I guess. Somehow. I guess that must make you immune to things like anxiety and societal expectations and such or something.

Mochi would approve. ;-)

As one of those people who initially misinterpreted Neeko, I can at least say that I am still around. :-) While I was, indeed, proven wrong, I am still quite confused by this story's intention: if it wants to be a lighthearted comedy, the issues it describes are too real, but if it wants to talk about anxiety and depression seriously, are we still supposed to find it funny, as the Comedy tag seems to suggest?

Poking fun at your own problems and feelings of worthlessness is one way to deal with them. I'm enjoying this a lot and I was in the same spot a year or two ago. It's actually kinda scary how some things in this manga are playing out exactly the same as how it was for me.

Quite a common way at that too.

Wait, she didn't have white at first ? Did she start bleaching them at some point or did they turn like that naturally ? If it's the latter, that pretty worrying...

Seeing as she's supposed to be Japanese I doubt this is the case for her but it's totally possible for someone's hair to change colors as they age. In my sister's case she was born blonde, her hair gradually darkened until it was a fairly dark brown by her 15-16th birthday, then it lightened up since then to a dark blonde/light brown. In Neeko's case though the explanation is probably dyeing it or something though.

I feel cheated, with that tag on this chapter I was expecting a meltdown, not a nostalgia trip, heck it's almost uplifting

with a little bit more effort, this could've been depressing. It only almost made me want to kill myself by comparison.

the black eyes when she asked “what about now” was some scary shit though haha. and the way she sat in all her old things from her simpler days that she’d never touch again. depressing af

This is more interesting than expected! Dem feels Neeko! We've all been there! (Living like a NEET but still gotta work, shits laaaame, lucky I have good friends to 'socialise' with) it's fun seeing a part of yourself in a character (heheh it sounds dirty but I mean well). I hope she gains some self esteem and starts enjoying the little things and becomes happier with herself NEET or not (if I knew her I'd suggest a large dose of MDMA lol) Looking forward to more chapters

I am still around, lol, and I admitted to being wrong about her anxiety all the way back at chapter three. And the reason I saw her as lazy and overreacting in the first two chapters was because she genuinely left such an impression upon me, which is what happens when a manga tries to portray a psychological issue as simultaneously funny and serious. It does not work like that, at least not for me. Koveras is right here, this manga is all over the place with its tone, trying to present the issue as both serious, but also a source of comedy. So it is no wonder people dismissed her anxiety in the beginning.

Poking fun at your own problems and feelings of worthlessness is one way to deal with them.

Except that is not what is happening here. Neeko is not poking fun at her own expense, the manga is. In other words, the author is the one who is trying to present these issues as comedic, and we are the ones who are supposed to see it as funny, not the character herself.

Also, I forgot the details of previous chapters, was it at any point actually stated what triggered her anxiety? She seems perfectly normal in flashbacks in this chapter, and apart from that failed interview she has a nightmare of all the way back in chapter one, I do not remember any exploration on part of the manga as to how she developed anxiety issues.

Seconded, lol, I have been shipping them for ages now~

I don't think there was a single cause; it built over time as she continually failed job interviews. Not even managing to find a part-time job, much less a career, gradually feeling more ashamed of herself and her position, seeing everyone else moving forward.

There were a lot of contributing factors.

If you haven't eaten for two weeks it can be hard to empathize with someone who complains they've only had three cookies today instead of their usual four.

I think this manga's goal is to make neets who would read it, feel guilty, or ashamed. And for the others to pity them.

Feel guilty toward their family, their friends, their past selves and even society as a whole.

The tone is comedy, but the subtext is that, at the moment, she's worthless.

That's a completely nonsensical comparison.

Apparently for Lain, all anxiety and issues with social expectations can simply be solved by being attractive and/or having some friends so it's somehow comparable to a legit nonissue like having one less cookie in a day, lol.

Something closer to a working example of what they were trying to say would be something along the lines of someone with a mild to moderate allergy to a given food complaining about having to eat it to someone who hasn't eaten in two weeks. Which is obviously not a valid comparison itself (because the two issues aren't remotely similar despite both involving food) but is at least more fair.

That still seems like an awful comparison.

I really don't know where people are getting this idea that she's got lots of friends. She's shown desperately avoiding anyone she once knew. She briefly got in touch with a single person, but immediately cut it off. And it never shows her being in contact with that person again.

But she's attractive! Which totally makes her life better, when she never leaves her house or talks to anyone but her family. And has major self esteem and anxiety issues making it all but impossible for her to actually take advantage of that fact in whatever way you might think she could. Also, she's a character in a fucking manga series. Pretty much all characters in manga series are depicted as being attractive. That's not actually anything special or out of the ordinary in her world. It's average, at best.

People who are so adamant that they have it worse than her to that extreme a degree really seem kind of delusional to me.

Considering that a number of her problems stem from actual medical issues, it's kind of like going up to a paraplegic struggling in a wheelchair and telling them to suck it up and that they don't really have it tough, not in the slightest. After all, they're pretty, and you have it much worse with leukemia. Even if it's true that you have it worse (which again, I really question), it just makes you a gigantic asshole.

Heck, I'm pretty sure I've seen some people claiming Neeko has it better than them while at the same time making statements denying the legitimacy of mental health issues. Which is completely absurd. And the latter is something I absolutely will not stand for.

I agree this was probably how it came to be, but I would genuinely like to see the manga exploring it as well, would make an interesting read and probably help people empathise with her.

Not responding to the rest because I basically agree with it all but this was actually the point I was trying to make with my post. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough on that. Even though my comparison was far more valid than Lain's, it was still a completely shit comparison and basically totally invalid.
