They’ve mentioned her “work” before, and it’s always when she’s writing. At first I thought it might be, I dunno, paperwork for the estate or something, but she’s got a roomful of books, so it’s been obvious that she’s a literary type. This confirms she gets money for it, though.

I think I got it, and moreover I think you’re right—that collar signifies, but exactly how it signifies in this context is very hard to say.

This story is like an old-fashioned “lovable orphan opens the heart of troubled curmudgeon” story with a subtext of “psychologically damaged adult grooms powerless child for sex.”

And it’s one of the cutest things I’ve ever read.

So adorable. I hope we get to see Mel's friends and their respective masters in at least one future chapter.

... I can't help but shake my head when I see people (including fictional characters) using "pedophile" as if it's a synonym for "child sexual abuser" when it's most certainly not. Pedophilia is simply having a sexual attraction to prepubescents; nothing more, nothing less. You can live your entire life as a pedophile without ever committing child sexual abuse.

... What are you on about? I am only "defending pedophilia" in so far as I am decrying the false assumption that every pedophile is by defintion either a child molester or will inevitably become one. That's like saying that being sexually attracted to women by definition guarantees that you will act upon said sexual attraction.

This author could make a grisly murder tale seem bright and cheery.

And as you say real people are wont to use the terms interchangeably whether they know better or not. Why would fictional characters not do the same, especially when we have no indication of them being aware of the distinction in-universe?

I was expecting the kidnapper to really appear to take away Mel, only for Master to barge in and tackle him to the ground while death-glaring him into not moving a single muscle.

I still can't tell how old Mel is suppose to be. She looks to be about 5yrs old, but beastkin could just be naturally small. I hope they don't have 5yr old girls, working as maids. Sometimes, the master, treat her like a child. Other times, the story, almost seems to be hinting at a romantic, relationship between the two.
