I have to say, the reduction of tone use in the art has definitely been an improvement. It really helps to see and sell the extreme facial expressions more.

A reminder in the first chapter breathing the same air as Anne made Kaoru shake and drool from excitement so hard that Anne believed she was possessed.

This manga literally makes me laugh out loud. The character dynamics are so bananas. Being nervous visiting another's house, fine. But being so arrested by the home and the aura of Anne's mom in particular as to fall silent at the table... and Anne's solution to this is to applaud... It's all just so funny.

Hey now, Kaoru's younger sibling and Anne's cat seem perfectly reasonable (reading Das Kapital as a 10 year old is perfectly reasonable). It's just that each family is only allowed to have a single member with more than two brain cells. Though, Kaoru's encounter with Ms. Red Flags seems to have given her an infusion of sanity, because she's been acting much more reasonably lately.

Yes, Kaoru is technically not using any psychoactive drugs. Anne thinking that she's on something is not that strange because Kaoru is always a drooling mess in front of her. The crazy part with her is that she goes full steam on that suspicion and tries to solve it with literal weed killer.

Correct, neither Kouru nor her friends use weed or any other form of drugs.

I can't recall exactly where I heard it, but from what I have heard, marijuana usage is not as common in Japan as in the West, or it at least isn't a publicly discussed thing. Many people in the West have some general understanding of what weed does, how it's used, etc, even if they themselves don't use it. On the other hand, the majority of Japanese people don't really know what weed does or how it's used beyond "a thing you smoke that has funky effects on your brain".
