"I'm immune to poison!"
But are you immune to bug...?

I think I've been corrupted by being around the otaku space too long, the worms seem rather tame to me. In fact I'd let my partner give me subordinating gut-eating worms. ...Oh no

Well, one thing you can say about the princess is that she has backup plans for the backup plans.

Is there such as thing as too much otaku space, I wonder?.. ^^;

Plan A: Make use of the caravan of villains.
Didn't work.
Plan B: Screw it, just kill them all.
That's so much like what my tabletop RPG players would do.

Here I was, foolish optimist that I am, thinking that the whistling bit was so very silly that the worms had to be a bluff. They apparently were not. And then the aftermath...Nope, nope, nope, get me off this ride right this minute!...

This series is so weirdly disturbing...

Also just...they want they tiny girl to wear this big dude's skin...? That doesn't even make sense

I honestly didn't even realize what happened to the merchant until I started reading the comments here. My mind seems to have blocked that part out the first time around, thanks a bunch, guys.

Says the person who's casually holding said human skin like a shawl. They be matching each other's freak

And indeed, the person knowledgeably discussing the spices needed to preserve human skins so you can wear them.

By itself, that stuff would just mean these two are serious psychos. But now I have bigger questions about the setting.
Apparently, not only does the princess know about spices that can preserve human skins so you can wear them, this is just a known thing in the culture, so a random antagonist can be saying "So, could be this princess will kill someone and try to wear their skin because that's a totally normal thing for a princess on the run to be doing, better check the spice merchants to see who's been buying the 'Human Skin Preservation' Dan-D-Pak."

WTF?!

Lmao yeah, it's so strange how the series in a single chapter introduces us to this completely bizarre and disturbing skin situation, while also treating it like it's just another Tuesday in this world

Honestly, her knowing that isn't too far-fetched. Most of the steps aren't too far from the process of tanning leather (something which people from tribal cultures will be more familiar with) and embalming fluids are mostly methanol and methanal*, plus salt.

The WTF part is trying to fool people by literaly wearing somebody else's skin. Even if we assume Lanze is only a hand shorter than the guy at her 165 cm, their anatomy is clearly different plus I wouldn't be suprised if being stuffed into (potentially padded) human skin in the desert will lead to heat stroke.

The chief's "she might be wearing a new face" might just refer to the normal types of masquerade. Hopefully.

* Better known as formaldehyde, but I like the sing-sang here.

Unless there's some disguise or transformation magic that uses the skin as a material component.

Yeah I'm officially out after this chapter. It was a rough ride up to this point...and now the murdering of slaves, plus attempting to murder children, I'll pass. I hope everyone else enjoys the story though!

I would recommend giving it till the next chapter, but I understand if you don’t want to. This is a weird series

I wasn't sure where the author was going here, but the ending makes me intrigued. Normally enslaved people in these types of stories are either completely dehumanized (like the others who didn't get unique designs in this chapter), or made to idolize the protagonist once they're freed by them.

This author is doing something completely different though. After explicitly showcasing how Jiujin has no morals and will do anything she thinks she needs to do to survive and killing one of the innocent enslaved men, the story flips the standard tropes on their head by having this woman drink the poison voluntarily to save her and her child's life.

This isn't a feel good moment where the protagonist gains an adoring slave that worships the ground they walk, nor is it a moment of complete dehumanization. Though brutal and gorey, the chapter ends with the enslaved woman taking things into her own hands and gaining agency in the story. She knows they can't be trusted so she drinks the poison to gain negotiating power. It's a move made from desperation, but it's a really great bit of characterization for someone who I had expected to be a background/one off character at best.
