Wow, were those the elusive useful bisexuals? Seriously that level of casual-chill while still taking the relationship seriously is a goal to aspire to xD

Why is gyaru yuri so goooood

I think - and this is totally my two cents here - it's because gyaru is inherently about self-expression; an intentional counter to Japanese culture of demure stoicism. So, with that in mind, you know that when a gyaru does or says something, she means it whole-heartedly; there are no filters. It is the honest truth because, if it wasn't, it wouldn't be gyaru.

This is why "gyaru + X" relationships are always fun - such as in Citrus - because there's always going to be a driving force towards something; it may be clumsy and silly and difficult and even completely inconsequential, but there are no antagonists needed to drive the plot: the gyaru is already at the wheel.

Pairing two gyaru up as we see here is, to me, like a breath of fresh air. How often do you see the story where two people are in a will-they-won't-they relationship that is constantly hampered by a lack of communication? If those two idiots would just open their gab-holes and TALK TO EACH OTHER they could skip 30 chapters straight to their happily-ever-after. In '#Gal and Gal Yuri', it feels like... that's what we did: we skipped right to the end, and we get to see two people in love gushing over each other, and basking in the honest, honey-sweet feelings they have for each other.

Yes, it's nice to have character growth and dynamic narratives and action and tension that rises and falls... a slice-of-life fluffy cute-fest may not be "interesting" in the classical sense. But if you do it right, you can avoid the sickly-sweet over-saturation and instead create a heartwarming indulgence.

And maybe there will be tension to come; maybe this story will take the well-trodden path of "oh no, they're not going to the same college together" or "oh no, they're entering Japanese society and now they have to dedicate the rest of their lives to a company rather than to each other". I wouldn't be surprised if it does, but I would be disappointed; I'd like to see a win for the gyaru movement. I'd like to see them make it work on their terms, to find both happiness and success without abandoning their non-conformity.

I don't believe the premise as described in the title by itself is deterministic. If a yuri series with two gyaru protagonists is a slice-of-life story with little to no drama, that is still a creative choice. Even if the gyaru archetype is known for a no-nonsense attitude, that does not mean two characters of this archetype will necessarily agree on things or can resolve every conflict by being honest.

The "gyaru x gyaru" premise also belies the distinct character dynamic of the titular couple. That is, they are both gyaru, but also more than that (just like any good gyaru character). For example, Reina is noted as more shy around people outside of her immediate circle than Yua is, and yet she was the one who asked Yua out. It's implied that she already fancied Yua in their first year when they were in different classes. Their relationship sails pretty smoothly, but it remains convincing because of all these little details in the brief glimpses we see of it.

Other than that, being girls who embrace a more confrontational style of femininity and always stick to their guns is just how I would describe the general, most surface-level appeal of the gyaru character; though to straight people their appeal may be different in ways I can only guess. (For example, from the perspective of a lot of straight men, maybe the appeal is the fantasy of 'fixing' a girl who looks and acts like a 'slut'.)

The specific appeal of gyaru in yuri probably has to do with what the gyaru archetype embodies by default, and what changes about the archetype when it's used in yuri. If I have to ask myself, one part of the unique appeal of a gyaru character who likes girls might be that she uses this confrontational femininity to attract another girl, and is also courageous to be loud and proud about it. (The couple in this series illustrate this well.)

From the other girl's perspective, the gyaru can be a source of inspiration (in attitude and feminine skills) and a source of physical affection even at the earliest stage of a relationship. Hugs between female friends are considered normal, but compared to other archetypes I can more easily think of gyaru characters in yuri who don't hesitate to drop what they're doing to check in with a crying girl and offer a hug even if they're not friends yet.

She mentioned how her family rarely gets together these days and it ends with them all celebrating her birthday together. Not to downplay the incredible efforts of Reina, but that was perhaps equally powerful and memorable for Yua. Truly the best birthday ever.

Holy biphobia and transphobia, Batman! Also, what out of the "so on" is miffing this fella about this work, exactly?

Perhaps the thing that puzzles me most about this website is that the trolls seem to feel they have much greater permission to complain about bi and trans yuri than, say, rape or lolicon.

Though the fact that they should choose to do this in the comment section of a manga where none of the above are even present is even more puzzling than that...

Also, I choose to believe that "Doom yuri" refers to yuri involving id software's landmark 1993 FPS, Doom.

I was confused why they were talking about all that stuff that's unrelated to this manga, only to realize "oh, they're saying this is one of the rare things that appeals to them, and they're also trying to vent/complain about those 4 along the way".
