As these things go, it's really not that toxic. Perhaps both the most toxic and the most interesting thing here is what Soprano is doing to HERSELF, in trying to completely bury the shy part of her personality. I'm wondering how that's going to work out.

Honestly I think this is pretty interesting. It's fundamentally a more or less standard romcom, clearly inspired by watanare (the whole friend vs lover dilemma, socially awkward ordinary protagonist x sexually forward love interest who's also a model). But the pacing and framing are straight out of a horror manga. This dissonance carried the manga through the first few chapters for me.

Recent chapters though have revealed additional layers. As @Purple Library Guy says, Soprano is really more toxic to herself than she is to Mirei. She's basically forcing herself to be like Oduka Mai because she thinks that's the only way to win over Mirei. That's a fairly unique dynamic and I'm curious to see where it goes from here.

Im sorry I can't get over this girl having a full weird reverse flash tier villain monologue about her feelings every other chapter its too funny. And Idk about anyone else but im definitely dropping if the the plot doesnt get moving soon. Five chapters in and it feels to me like there's basically no momentum.

Also there is 0 chance this is AI. The artist has been posting art on pixiv since at least 2020. These consistently weird proportions are quite literally evidence of the human touch. Probably from long developed bad habits if I had to guess. Not enough referencing or proper construction, maybe.

hey TLer, you're making some seriously bizarre choices. what young child says shit like "perish the thought"??? what teen girl says "not too shabby"? it makes it hard to enjoy the work for what it is. i'm normally very forgiving with this stuff because scanlation is a labor of love, but this is a little ridiculous

I agree "perish the thought" is kind of odd here, vs. "no way". OTOH we don't know what the Japanese was. Maybe she was a well-read and formal kid.

You talking about "seriously bizarre choices" and "I'm very forgiving" and "this is ridiculous" is a pretty hostile tone, vs. "this seems odd, why did you choose this?"

In context, it probably should have been translated as "Of course I have!"

and as for the "there's no standard teen girl talk" thing, sure, there isn't. but contextually soprano is a popular teen model and can act the part, it's not like she's a withdrawn bookworm in present time. "shabby" is really outdated however you look at it. the only explanation would be if the TLer is british, because maybe they still use it there? idk? but otherwise it's a poor choice of phrasing.

"Not too shabby" is a common phrase in American English. Using "shabby" by itself might be strange, but the phrase as a whole is fine and didn't feel out of place to me at all. "Perish the thought" is probably too formal given the Japanese line, but I'm not sure it was worth multiple posts of discourse about it lol.

Anyway, to move on to the content of the chapters posted, I'm still enjoying this series. It's feeling less like a horror manga now as Mirei comes to understand Soprano more (i.e. she's fronting constantly because she hates herself). I also liked how Emi handled the entire situation extremely rationally lol. Soprano needs a real friend other than Mirei, maybe Emi can be that for her.
