220k a month that's like $24,000 a year
That's 2.64M yen or $18,500 USD a year
You're using exchange rate; I was using an approximation of PPP, which is more relevant (rent doesn't become more expensive just because the yen falls against the dollar, ditto domestically provided services like childcare or healthcare); officially the PPP is 94 yen per dollar, I used 100 because I'm lazy and it's close enough.
(lazy indeed: Y220k / 100 -> $2000/month, *12 for 24,000/year. More accurately, it could be as high as $28,000/year in PPP. It helps that you can find cheaper rent in Japan than in similar-ish US cities today, while spending little on transportation or health care.)
