I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Yuri, is in fact, Girl's Love/Yuri, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Girl's Love plus Yuri. Yuri is not an genre unto itself, but rather a narrative component of a fully fledged Girl's Love story, made enjoyable by the Girl's Love focus on romance, dating, and cute fluff compromising a full drama as defined by the OED.
Many manga readers consume a modified version of Yuri every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, only the version of Yuri which is widely read for WLW romances is often called Yuri, and many readers are not aware it is basically Girl's Love, written by a Girl's Love author.
There really is a Yuri, and these people are reading it, but it is just a part of the story they read. Yuri is the narrative focus: the way the story puts the interpersonal relationships of women in the spotlight. This is an important part of every romance, but useless by itself; it can only be delightful as a context for a complete dramatic arc. Yuri is normally the foundation for Girl's Love: the whole sapphic manga is basically Yuri with Girl's Love added, or GL/Yuri. All the so-called Yuri manga are really stories of GL/Yuri!
