Mashiro just dropped the twist of the film Teeth (2007), and I'm just supposed to be chill?
Yea the myth of vagina having teeth or taking men's pps is millenias old, but it truly is wild how far the family curse goes if Mashiro is telling the truth. This series needs to turn into a mystery detective story now bc i need to know everything about this curse.
Also the couple was so cute and stupid together. Took so long to think not to kiss even tho the kiss had a functional reason for happening.
Mashiro is still annoying to me tho, constantly bashing Chihaya for dating 1 man as honestly as possible while she kisses a random ass man who had no business here and dragging him in to all this than kissing the boyfriend.

Tsubakida is going to thank her later, trust

I don't normally post here but AFAIK Mashiro's mother and Chihaya's are siblings? That means Chihaya and her father took on her mother/wife's family name. My question is that how was Chihaya (and her cousin) born then with the curse only affected females? IVG? And why didn't her father turn into female earlier? (They mentioned during intercourse the male will permanently turn into female at best and have their intestines fully blown up at worst). Idk if am missing something here so pls elaborate.
I find it noteworthy that our protagonist really just said "I want to remain a boy so I can fulfill the heteronormative milestone of PIV and that's about it, that's my only attachment to the male gender, that mine personally happens to come with that one piece of equipment." I bet if they start taking feminizing HRT they can bypass the curse and thus keep the equipment while getting rid of the gender ;) there's our happy ending.
Also my money is on the teeth-style claim being bullshit, that would require the women to have something physically change and there's been zero indication that's been a thing. It's possible she's not lying but if she isn't she just didn't understand what she saw or heard, because she's also just a dumb teenager who doesn't even know women can like women yet.

I'm surprised people here are saying "wow who cares if everyone finds out about the curse!"
Being shunned by everyone else isn't easy.
Imagine if people knew there is a family around turning men into women. The women would be seen as evil and the men as perverted freaks. Add in the religious supernatural part and its even worse.
I don't know how religious freaks are in Japan but this seems like the recipe to get harrassed NON STOP.
I think more than just getting harrassed, they could get put in real danger. Transphobia, particularly wrt to trans woman. Part of that is just general hatred of a minority that is at the intersection of a few different systems of oppression, but part of is that the act of transitioning presents a real threat to hegemonic ideas of gender, gender roles, patriarchy, etc. The only saving grace trans people have in this lens, is that transition is something that is long, difficult, can only be achieved with immense effort on the behalf of the individual that undertakes it, and is "imperfect" enough that trans people can be regarded as separate from the system as a whole. A family that had the ability to subject others (willing or otherwise) to near instant, perfect transition, would be far more dangerous to that system than just individual trans people. They wouldn't just be seen as evil, they would be seen as dangerous. If the government didn't kidnap them they might just straight up get lynched.
Now tbh I don't really see this story going with that angle if the secret does get out, but i think that'd be a pretty reasonable fear for the family to have.

The scenario does invoke the vagina dentata trope, but she does not mention any teeth. It sounds to me like the organ is just kind of eviscerated by an invisible force, the same way during a kiss the whole body is instantly feminized by an invisible supernatural entity. (Hodaka caught a glimpse of a monster before his first transformation, but other people can't see it.)
A bit melodramatic given what stakes have been presented so far
"You get the girl of your dreams, but I'm exchange getting close to her will turn you into a female model"
Such dilemma
I am still suspicious of anything Mashiro says, since the last pages appear to imply that she has feelings for Chihaya, too, and therefore may have ulterior motives for breaking her up with Hodaka.
LOVE this. akizuki joins my very exclusive roster of "men i do not mind seeing in my yuri manga". id even allow them to have their curse-broken het ending if the story goes that way cuz he's that much of a chad.
It kind of feels like Chihaya is rewriting this boy's brain. Maybe it's not mind control but there is... something going on there. Gender dysphoria can cause dissociation which could explain why Hodaka has apparently no preferences of his own. Or he's actually an ideal boyfriend candidate who was custom made for Chihaya. Or maybe the two met when they were younger and Chihaya accidentally brainwashed him. Or his brain was ravaged by some other trauma. Either way, with how much attention has been drawn to his blank slate nature, I will be surprised if it's never explained
Aquarium date? OK this dude really is a lesbian haha but seriously, another good chapter
Typical assuming broad. I'm certain Koga has the best intentions in mind as Chihaya's friend, but she jumped the gun by accusing Hodaka of being the cause behind Chihaya's mood when he's the least guilty party in this affair.
There's been multiple recent manga published in mainstream sources like Ayakashi Triangle and Zenbu Kimi no Sei that deliberately subverted their cishet potential to be brazenly queer instead. All the details align with Hodaka being genderqueer, they've even told Chihaya "I get to be a girl and I get to be with you, two birds with one stone!" to reassure her they're fine with the curse. As far as I'm concerned we should already be avoiding he/him pronouns based on the text in front of us without even reading into meta things like the aquarium date, and it would be very foolish to assume "oh he'll just end up a guy in the end".
ps: if you haven't read it, Zenbu Kimi no Sei is complete on Mangadex and is very similar to this except they're BOTH constantly switching and it's more comedic focused. If you like this manga you'll probably like that one :)

I doubt he'll end up as "just a guy" in the end, but I still think it's pre-emptive to avoid using he/him when the text has also made it obvious he's still uncomfortable with being transformed into a woman and that there's more to work on there in how he views it. And I definitely read the reassurance there as him jumping to trying to make her feel better despite how he feels uncomfortable.
Like, even if he ends up being 100% a trans woman, this is still something thrust upon him that he's trying to figure out, and we don't know how the cards will fall, especially because I'm almost certain the source of the curse will be addressed. I feel like he might end up bigender in the end, feeling both equally a man and a woman.
Also, as someone who is a nonbinary butch, I'm kinda annoyed at a common presumption that entering an enby space always means detachment from your AGAB. I still identify as a woman and use she/her even tho I'm absolutely also nb. Hodaka's gender identity being more complex than "just a guy" doesn't mean being a guy won't be an important component of the end result.
Shishizaki is totally gay.

Hodaka is completely dissociated from their AGAB though, did you miss the whole "have I ever really liked or enjoyed anything before now" angle? They don't seem to have any ties to it whatsoever except the inertia from being raised that way and the expectation that their girlfriend presumably wants a boyfriend. Currently there's confusion between "is this new ability to enjoy literally anything caused by grenderbending or is it caused by being in love" but it's not exactly normal to not even like food and then suddenly you get a first girlfriend and it tastes good now lol. Dysphoria is one of the few things in life for those who have it that makes every single aspect of life worse, including raw physical sensations. There's others like severe depression but severe depression is not normally cured so quickly, whereas if you genderbend your average egg they'd start feeling like life is wonderful pretty much instantly lol

I know what dysphoria feels like, and don't assume I don't. My life vastly improved when I addressed my dysphoria, but it didn't mean I disconnected entirely from my AGAB.

Okay, but you are not Hodaka lol. They're looking pretty thoroughly disconnected already.
The feminization will become permanent if the relationship continues, which is an outcome that would be pretty devastating for anyone who doesn't already hate living as a guy, or is at all attached to the idea. I hope for his sake that he isn't very attached to his manhood, 'cause unless he breaks up with Chihaya or takes a vow of celibacy, his balls are not long for this world

I still disagree with you, especially because I think whatever's going on with the curse is going to be addressed in some fashion and make Hodaka's choices more complex as to what he wants to be. Also, what you wrote screams "binary trans experience", so if you're not enby yourself I want you to think long and hard why you decided that another person in the trans umbrella had to have a lecture on dysphoria.

My gender is none of your business lmao. I didn't lecture you about anything, I laid out my reasoning for why I read the character the way I do, which required drawing connections between various aspects of dysphoria with the character's emotions.
I don't know what you mean in particular by "binary trans experience" (if such a thing exists outside of your assumptions I've never seen it nor heard anyone personally testify to it, the very existence of trans people is a violation of gender boundaries, that's why the radfems struggled so badly with the concept of trans people), but it's certainly not what I described as my impression of the character, let alone "screamed" it. What kind of 'binary gender' uses they/them pronouns?

This isn't worth the effort. I'm done.

He's MELTING lmao
Edit: yeah uhhh can we keep the thread about the manga to actually talk about the manga please
I do think he/him pronouns are appropriate for now, if only because it's pretty clear he's uncomfortable with the idea of transforming, at least in the early chapters. I do also agree that this is very queer-coded though, honestly makes me happy

Oh shit you're right. Yuri ending confirmed

She could very easily be the first person to call you by your name if you chaaanged your name~
Also lmao as nice as they both are this is such a dumb baby relationship. Which yeah is par for the course in the romance genre, but perhaps because there's such thick [gender] in the air around Akizuki I feel more inclined than usual to point out that these kids both need therapy much more immediately than they need a partner.
