My take is that RWBY was never good in the traditional sense, but was a lot of fun as an amateur project. The first season was so low budget the background characters were just black silhouettes, but there was a lot of passion behind the creative fight choreography. Then the creator unfortunately passed away as the series started taking itself more seriously, so it lost both the charm in the fight scenes and in its amateur but passionate vibe.
I haven't properly watched the show since volume 4 but I've been following Blake and Yang's relationship because I've been irrationally obsessed with them since 2014. They're just the quintessential light/dark couple to me.
