Much of this story is exactly how I feel when I go through a nice dream with an ex...and then I wake up.

That realization of what you had, what you could've had, what you wished to be, just ceased. But your mind keeps playing it, like a constant curse. Like you're a ghost, bound to a paradise that you could never live in, only watch as it's destroyed. Again and again.

ugh.

fortunately those have been rare.

but yeah that would be a good reason to write/read a story like this.

Now this is how you handle tragedy/drama. It hurts like hell but it's just so darn good. Love it.

Ugh, I was not in the right headspace for a depressing as fuck / tragedy story. Gonna throw off the rest of my day.

Why does this work do not have the tag of "Depressing as fuck" and maybe "aaangst" and perhaps a new one "Removing the will to live after reading" ??

As previous comments have discussed, spoilers issue. A reader coming in seeing a "Depressing as fuck" tag might deduce why the girl woke up in the bathtub in the beginning, removing the shock factor of the story. "aaangst" might work though. It's a Sudou Yumi story anyway, these surreal, angsty, tragedy elements are common.

Updating the tags so that it is searchable and can be found with the relevant tags for people looking for similar works. They will be spoilers, but most readers who will read this serendipitously already have

I didn't come back but it was part of my featured novels. I'm glad I clicked on this even with the new tags cause I think of this story A LOT. I normally don't click on angst, depressing, or tragedy tags but I wanted to see where this went. I knew this story the moment I saw the bathtub scene and decided to reread this. Reading this again after 5 years made me realize this story was even sadder than the first time I read it. I originally thought that the promise to meet at the beach was true only to realize it was part of her dream. Along with a few other things but I need to sort them out first along with my feelings because I can't put them into words.

Pretty sure she killed herself. I really dislike it when someone kill themselves over a break up. They don't think about their family or the friends they leave behind. News break? Dating is not the only thing you can do in this world, there are plenty of people out there who's waiting for the future you to be with them.

I know it's old but this is kind of a bad way of thinking cus you're dismissing someone's feelings, something that was enough for them to go off the deep end. If you use this argument on anything else: it's only a job, it's only friends, it's only family, it's only money... All of them are replaceable technically but they could mean so much to someone that the loss of them throws their life off kilter or it could have compounded on top of a lot of different things.

Have a little bit more empathy and compassion.

Ugh stop that. You're just ignoring people's feeling when they're too occupied by one of their emotions. In retrospect of course reasons for suicide may seems silly and there are other reasons for someone to stay alive, but at that time it's very common for people to think "none matters anymore".

The only reason you may feel that way is that you've never been suicidal and have never had anyone suicidal to tell you how does it feel (maybe you're just not seen as trustworthy enough for them to discuss deep feelings like this), i.e. living your life in easy mode.

All that aside, Chiharu didn't even die due to suicide. She's about to go on a date with Hiro near the sea and went for a bathing to make herself look good but passed out and drowned. Nothing in the work ever implied they broke up.

The way you quickly jump to conclusions and start judging characters is so pathetic and yells FXXKING PRIVILEGE it isn't even funny anymore.

It's kinda funny that even though I overlooked the "tragedy" tag I still have a gut feeling Chiharu is dead on the first few pages when she rises from the bathtub. It's possible because (CONTENT WARNING: suicide method discussion ahead) so many creators choose "wrist cut and put arm into hot water (bath water in many cases) so they can't naturally heal, and so character bled out" as their characters' suicidal method (OMG), though I didn't guessed it right that she didn`t die due to suicide but more likely accidental.

This story is pretty depressing. Chiharu developed insomnia (and possibly illusional), and later died due to bathroom accident, while Hiro just forgot she ever had a girlfriend, or at least that's how I read page 28 ("for some reason"? "What is this"? I don't think she even remembers anymore...)

I don't really understand whether Chiharu is imagining things in page 18 and page 21 or not, it is possible that she's depressed and started imagining Hiro treating her coldly, or Hiro really did being an ass, it could even be she only imagined the latter one when she's consoled by Hiro. Maybe the author just want to play with ambiguity a bit. Anyway, really well planned and done oneshot. Really well orchestrated.

(sob)

She didn’t break up with Chiharu properly. She moved to another town and never came back and she stopped contact with Chiharu. Why? If you don’t love her anymore you shouldn’t left her like that. You should end your relationship properly then you can do what ever you want. I bet Hiro don’t even know that Chiharu is dead.

This. Totally agreed. If Hiro doesn't like Chiharu anymore she should break up, but not left things hanging like this.

The premise though, is that Hiro still remembers that she has a gf in that town. To me it sounds like she probably doesn't even remember Chiharu anymore, so why breaking up?

u guys who can figure this out make me feel so stupid
esp with the black and white pages

It's a quite commonly used technique in manga as a way to distinguish between memory of the pass/current events. In many cases there's a clear indication showing "I'm entering memory replay mode here" like a character saying "I remember when something happened I was doing blablabla" then enters the black gutter memory section, but others (like this one) don't explicitly shows that.

It's just past experience, nothing related to being smart or dumb. You'll gradually figure out the pattern when you read more manga.

I really think that tagging correctly should be prioritized over spoiler issue, especially for tags like "tragedy" and "depressing AF". The risk of "no adding tragedy or depressing tags because it would be spoilers" is that people not in the right mood for depressing stuff or tragedy can step in unconsciously, and in worst cases, triggers someone with mental issues.
