^ This reminds me of exactly why I can never look at the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving or Christmas specials as anything other than tone-deaf commercialism that refuses to acknowledge actual history. Every time the Christmas special would come on, it would pain me to see my mom choke up when Linus spews the church-sanctioned "Christmas story" that has nothing to do with reality. I'm glad Apple's continued quest in the name of greed prevented both of them from poisoning more children's minds this year on broadcast TV.

I'm really hoping at some point we'll be able to completely do away with celebrating many current holidays with stained legacies and just participate in things like World Gratitude Day (September 21st).

I mean the "reality" of Jesus's birth is a thing headaches are made of, since obviously nobody important actually took notice at the time and the relevant parts of New Testament canon (Luke and Matthew) were written seventy-plus years later, but the basic outlines of the family's travel narrative are plausible and details check out against recorded events. Notably Herod the Great who died in 4 BCE - the Census of Quirinus only happened 9 years later so Luke dun goofed, though that sort of gaffe can be excused given the temporal distance and having to rely pretty heavily on oral tradition.

The history of the actual celebration actually starts fairly late (it's first recorded in 336 CE) and is... pretty complicated which really shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Nor that Everyone & Dog, Inc. put their own spin on it not at all coincidentially usually drawing heavily on local pagan traditions of winter solstice celebration.

So I guess you could say that the details aren't very... stable?

Turkeys sure aren't pretty birds huh.

I quite agree. Who would want to eat something with a face like a diseased scrotum?

The quality of scrotums is not strain'd.
They droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the pubes beneath. They are twice blest:
They blesseth him that nibbles and him that jiggles.
They are wrinkly in the wrinkliest; they become
The royal turkey better than his feathers.
His ballsack shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of CBT;
But scrotums are above mere testicular sway.
They are enthronèd in the pants of chads;
And are an attribute to Adam Himself;
And earthly scrotum doth then show likest God's
When shrinkage seasons justice.

Perfection!

Speaking of Christmas and stupid traditions (I could have entire rant about bastardization of idea of Christmas), it was always funny to me that for Christians fish meat doesn't count as a meat. Like they forbid from eating meat during Eve, but somehow fish meat doesn't count as meat? I always figured it was because actually not eating any meat would be a pain, especially since it's supposed to be a celebration, that's why they arbitrary decided to say that fish meat doesn't count and is fine to eat. Thanks to it whenever meat is mentioned, I don't immediately think about fishes and fish meat to me feels like some separate kind of meat.

Pretty sure you can thank the ancient Israelites for that - those guys notoriously thought bats are birds (Leviticus 11:19 and Deuteronomy 14:18) so... yeah. Weird food-related taboos are dime a dozen in belief systems and folk practices the world over, of course.

But then again Moby Dick stubbornly keeps talking about whales as fish too. Melville had himself been a sailor on a whaler and you'd think people who dismembered those critters for a living had sort of noticed the very obvious anatomical differences buuuuut...

I've never eaten turkey. Cherokee tradition says that it is unhealthy meat which may make you weak & sick.

To be fair, most of these traditions evolved from practical concerns. It's commonly theorized that Jewish ideas of kosher and non-kosher food arose from a desire to avoid consuming meats that had a higher risk of carrying diseases or infections, or were just harder to treat in general. The same goes for why certain vegetarian cultures, like Japan (which banned meat for around 12 centuries) don't count fish as meat, because animals were resource-intensive to raise and considerably more useful for long-term farming than short term consumption. As a cultural justification, the doctrine of karma was used to discourage eating other lifeforms (apart from the poor fish).

So a lot of the traditions that might seem 'weird' or 'primitive' now had pretty good justifications back when they were devised. Anthropologically speaking, these conventions become ironclad and non-questionable in local culture, leading to people often forgetting the central logic behind them, which creates narratives of tradition vs modernity and 'superstitious barbarians' in the modern world, even though humans are fundamentally rational and rarely act without some kind of reward-perception. In this case, there'd be a much lower chance of getting food-poisoning from a store-brought turkey today, as compared to a wild turkey hunted and cooked centuries ago with the methods of the time. So what was survival instinct for folks back then seems like strange superstition to us now. Whether folks opt to keep old traditions alive out of a sense of respect for the ways of their ancestors or choose to indulge in the pleasures of the modern world is, of course, a matter of personal discretion.

humans are fundamentally rational

I'll admit that I don't fully understand this species' mental processes, but that statement doesn't seem consistent with what I've observed of their behaviour so far...

By the way, I've been meaning to introduce myself. So here goes: I'm Lizbo the lily-loving lizanthrope lurker, and I'm here for the lizards. Or I was, at any rate. Somewhere along the way I got sucked in by the homo sapiens-themed manga, and recently I've even started reading the ones that don't focus solely on their reproductive practices. (Still haven't figured out how that's supposed to work...) Anyway, I thought it was about time to join up and give the community the benefit of my insights.

Took me another six months to actually join, mind you. Yes, well, I was going to draw myself a personalized avatar, but I've made zero progress on that front, so I eventually gave up and went with some random reptile I found on the internet. Add "lazy" to that description...

This paragraph serves no purpose other than attempting to stop the post being flagged as spam. It'll be ironic if it works.

When studying history, you'd expect to study sources for a work on a topic, not that the sources themselves would be the topic you'd have to work on.
-.-

Like, literally, for my seminar, I have to make work on the topic of "Sources for Ancient Egypt". Like bruh. I'd rather use the sources to study for a more rewarding topic, not have them be the topic.

I can see how you might think like that since human actions often seem irrational to unbiased observer. It's more that while the logic or explanation of their action isn't always the best, there is always a underlying reason people do what they do. Like all the myth, legends and gods are just our ancestors ways to trying to understand the world the best to their abilities. As Kirin mentioned, they created rules and tradition that to us might seem stupid, but for them made perfect sense. So the way they came to certain conclusions might not be entirely "rational", but their ways to deal with it was the best they could come up with based on their current understanding of it. Think of it as madman who to everyone else seems insane, but to them, their actions makes perfect sense. Humans are more about being consistent and following their internal logic rather than always doing the logical thing.

Also welcome to human society! Hope, you'll like it here ;3

To elaborate, rationality here simply means 'acting in a way that offers an individual benefits or avoids harm'. So in a hyper-religious society that believes in the existence of a sin-determined afterlife as fact, it would be 'rational' not to steal food from a neighbour even if you're starving, because the agony of being thrown into eternal damnation for your crimes would outweigh the benefits of a quick meal (to say nothing of the very real consequences of getting caught and punished for your crime). In an atheistic, individualistic society that incentivizes looking out for number one, it simply becomes a question of whether or not you can get away with it. So logic is different in different places and different times, depending on a metric ton of factors like culture, philosophy, politics, yadda, yadda, yadda. Really makes you appreciate how honest and unpretentious lizards are.

I checked out their DeviantArt profile, and there seems to be some very interesting art there. I liked this piece in particular-

Really captures what makes the artstyle of each show special while still maintaining a neat, central consistency.

She's a countrywoman of mine. That's how I found about her: there aren't that many people from Uruguay who can make a living by drawing online comics. She usually writes in English because, well, the English-speaking market is way way bigger (duh).

Her art and strips in DeviantArt & Pixiv are fine, but her main work is the webcomic "Lovin' Sis" which has already reached Season 3. If we had to tag it in Dynasty, the tags would look something like:
Yuri - Het - Lolicon - Shotacon - Bondage - Sibling Incest - Parental Incest - EXTREMELY NSFW.
or whatever similar tags exist, lol.

I want to recommend "Lovin' Sis" to those who dare to brave the tags just listed and feel like reading a fun story with fun characters who really really love sex (that's everyone in the comic, even the grade schoolers).

It's really light fun, only with a lot of sex (and no taboos).
Looking at this relationship chart should make it downright obvious:

I like how there's a clear distinction between sometimes fuck partners, regular lovers and loving couples: in a story with so much sex, it's important!
I also like that on 12 characters there are 10 girls; and one of them is in the center. :v

I'm gonna share one of (the tamer) strips to give you a peek at the humor style:

I've been hankering for sapphic content lately- not stuff that's overtly yuri with tons of sex and thirst, but subtle, soft content that doesn't flag itself as gay, but is unmistakeably so when you look closer. Longing stretches of eye contact, gentle expressions, fleeting touches and just a quiet, tranquil sense of company- content like that has always been my favourite, regardless of the medium. Therefore, I embarked upon a search across YouTube, and came across this music video, which made me smile so hard that I might've developed a face cramp. Seriously, this is the sweetest, softest stuff ever.
