Funfact: some Renaissance duelists used mail-palmed gloves to parry (and grab, though if you know what you're doing that works barehanded too) swords.
...I remain legitimately mystified by what kind of spaz you have to be to not work out the basic safety protocols of kitchen cutlery after the first few unfortunate knife-on-finger encounters already by trial and error, though.
Some knifes are just bad and make it very apparent. And if your not informed on what knife does what job the best you may have to use more force then needed for instance. Tomatoes and bread use serrated knifes for most meats and hard vegetables the sharpest thing you can find. With things like herbs done with medium sized sharp knifes. Personally I am fond of wet stones just sharpening stuff on them is therapeutic for me and they can make garbage blades into really good quality ones. I cut while relaxed and try not to think about the fact I bought a rock that costed 100$
Also this form went from yuri fluff to cooking advice from the internet real fast didn't it.

Jeez.... I didn't intend to make anyone feel stupid. I didn't really take ADHD or motor skill impairments into the equation. Sorry if I offended anyone.
Alright, someone without those extenuating circumstances should be able to handle a knife correctly after the first 2 or 3 times just by doing it slow and careful. Better?
PS: If it's peeling related, there really are super handy uncomplicated peelers that can't cut you even if you tried. They are also way more efficient at the job and don't cut off half the damn veggies. lol

If a cooking instructor saw me wielding a knife, she'd cry out in terror and ban me from the kitchen. And yet I've never cut myself while wielding a knife. Cleaning it on the other hand...

And yet I have cut myself with one of those handy uncomplicated peelers you can't cut yourself with. As well as lopping off several pieces of fingernail in various sizes and shapes.
Edit: Not currently having a lover, I've no reason not to grow out my nails; except that that damn pesky potato peeler won't let me. (A slight exaggeration.)

....did you put the peeler on your finger on purpose? Did you sleepwalk and mixed up the potato with your hand? I'm actually terrified of your super-human ability to harm yourself!

Hey, peeling small potatoes and even the thin and long carrots do chip the nails despite using the 'safe' peeler

Sounds just clumsy to me...
I guess we are not talking about the same type of peeler then. That or I am actually a skilled 5 star chef. Pretty sure we know which is more likely.

How do you cut your hand more than once in your life? I just can't believe someone is that clumsy. After the first cut you would naturally become more careful and learn how to hold the knife right.
But then we couldn't have the "clumsy, but a hard worker" cliche I guess. lol(or get one of those newfangled state of the art peelers...)
I still cut myself while cooking, sometimes more than one, I'm not saying it's normal, it's because I'm really stupid... :(
Don't get down on yourself like that. People have a wide variety of levels of motor skills, and a lot of people are careless because of other conditions like ADHD. I don't know what your situation is, but just because you're careless or clumsy while cooking doesn't mean you're stupid.
Thank you for your kind words.
Here is some advice from and ADHD guy who has shaky hands.
1.go slow there's no need to rush.
2.try and start with big produce it's safer to cut as practice.
3. Before you cut check your hand placement.
4. The knife is sharp it can do the work of you let it. Slow back and forth movements with light pressure is all you need.
5. Cut cold it makes things a bit easier.
6. Dip you knife in a bowl of water it will make certain cuts butter smooth.
7. Kitchen shears are great for beginners and good ones can be cheaper then knives.
Now I still cut myslef from time to time literally every person that cooks does. It just comes with the territory.
Two additional tips (from someone else with ADD):
- When was the last time you ate or slept? When my hands are less steady than I'd like, I can normally point to one of those two things as the culprit. A quick snack and dong something else with your hands for a bit might help.
- Make sure the knife actually is sharp; the sharper the better. It might seem paradoxical, but a dull blade (even if it can still cut) is WAY more likely to injure you and it'll just be a pain to work with. If you're going to start cooking more, it's probably a good idea to pick up a decent or good knife sharpener and get in the habit of keeping a good edge on your knives. (Also, as a heads up, if you bought a knife set and it came with a metal rod on a handle, it's likely meant for honing knives, not sharpening them, and trying to use it to sharpen your knives will cause problems.)

It actually is pretty normal, aside from the whole discussion of ADD or whatever. Knifes are sharp, people are fallible, distractions exist, so does tiredness, etc.
I've been cooking for a hell of a long time, and I still give myself a nick (or worse) once in a blue moon.
Damn

I find you get very far by just 1) taking stock of a few key factors (namely the spatial relationship between the knife, the ingredient and your extremities) 2) thinking a few steps ahead (namely where the knife will/can end up at if it slips or suddenly clears the rest of the thing being cut) 3) adjusting the former as necessary in light of the latter.
I literally can't even remember when was the last time I managed to cut myself in the kitchen; OTOH I semi-regularly suffer trivial burns from the frying pan but that's due to calculated risk-taking in the interests of saving effort elsewhere...
^If you cook all the time to the point of it becoming a trivial daily task, I think you do NOT tend to put any thought into what your hands are doing - you will be thinking 3 steps ahead - or about something unrelated.
Even with all the experience, you will have the odd accident when you don't pay much attention- and don't think about the knife at all - and that is easy to do with a task you have done so much it is mundane. especially if you are rushing or multitasking the kids or 5 other things.
P.s Nice new chapter :)
The hard question of where its safe to leave hickies on your gf.

I don't cook all the time, though. Kind of not worth the effort when you live alone. Any number of other things still need cutting in the kitchen regardless though - fruits, veggies, bread, packaging... you name it.
And it's part of my "on autopilot" drill to always, always be aware of where exactly the sharp implements are and which way they're going. Even when eating actually; a legacy of once having lost the corners of two front teeth to accidentally biting down on the tip of a fork as a kid... >_<
...though come think of it the reflexive care I have for sharp implements might stem partly from the vocational training I undertook years ago; pointy tools and certain amount of rotating machinery were regularly involved so you developed a healthy respect for such things very quickly. (The mandatory accompanying first-aid course making a point of underlining the dangers of carelessness around such things with graphic ER photographs certainly also helped drive the principle home.)
especially if you are rushing or multitasking the kids or 5 other things.
Well yeah, that kind of distraction will net you accidents all right but that's getting pretty external to the actual cutlery handling now isn't it? Because that rather of applies regardless of what you're trying to do...
This makes me smile every chapter.

I was thinking about this, too, and I don’t believe I’ve ever cut myself with knife before. And I have ADHD. I’ve burned my hands before, though.
Half of me is on the this is cute side and the other can't get over the ping ponging between 4 characters.
Both halves are right imo. Its often very cute, but I really cant keep track of all the characters and who is who, with who..
I'd of proffered it if it had 1 sister/couple for the main focus for say 4-5 chapters in a row before switching, so I could get a handle on them all.I'm glad I'm not the only one
I don't hate it, it's just confusing
I keep forgetting which character is the sister and which is the lover lol
Interesting. I find it pretty easy to keep up with. You have the teacher-student couple, the senpai-kouhai couple, the childhood friends couple, and the one-sided coworker crush (for now).
I don't know what's more baffling: The fact that they somehow concluded that she needs to give her hickeys or that anyone would assume that the legs are the safest place.
She is literally wearing a skirt and has exposed legs!
I knocked this up to mainly help myself keep track of them all- maybe someone else will find it useful, or want to read each story arc in sequence. So here's the details on the Sakimiya sisters and their loves :)
