This is giving me some "Carol" vibes... Maybe it's just me.
It's not just you. This one rubs me the wrong way, though. Carol's a longer narrative, or at least we got more of it in a single sitting than this. But, even so, a lot of implications are made here in this one meeting. Yuki's just being a shy servant and is admiring someone she respects from afar. Beniko, however, is an older woman, a person of renown/authority, and just decides to pursue Yuki. The way she's going about it is weird, too, with her cryptic speech and dominating each of their interactions. Not to mention there's the whole "dating a fan" dynamic happening here. Beniko just comes off as predatory to me, and it's not just the age gap. Beloved L is one of my favorite stories ever, so I don't really care about age gap on principle. I have a problem with certain dynamics that use that age gap as anything more than coincidence. Beniko is clearly utilizing her higher authority to create some level of control over her target. And I do mean target, because her actions seemed rather pointed since she entered the cafe. Every action she makes is deliberate. Then, she has the creepy scene describing Yuki's skin and how pretty she is. Considering Yuki's disposition and (perhaps no coincidental) similarities to Beniko's book character, I think Beniko is viewing Yuki more as a doll or something to own rather than a person she's trying to woo.
I'm getting Carol vibes, but not the good kind. Will continue to read, but this chapter made me uncomfortable.
