Nakatani should just have created the characters - without that inane backstory for Touko that only served to turn her into yet another uber-cliché melancholy dark-haired girl - which are great, and let some of these fan-artists do the writing.
They seem to be able to write a much more entertaining and down to earth story for these girls.

What you think is bad writing is actually just a story with depth. What you want is not a story, it's inane slice-of-life romance. We only got about 2 million of those, so why don't you take a seat back and let complex writing happen in front of your eyes for once?

June 14 is Kiss Day (and also the day that this comic was originally posted by the artist). The notable exception is April 14, which is Black Day. On this day, single people go out to eat black bean noodles and commiserate over their loneliness.

And Kiss Day is exactly what it sounds like - you celebrate the day by kissing your significant other. Companies use this opportunity to market lipstick and breath mints.

^^That's equally brilliant, to be honest. Chika rising up from out of frame and grabbing the pocky in her mouth like a dolphin at one of those water shows some amusement parks have.

The only reason I can think of for the genderswapped joker being so popular is the song in Dancing Star Night and the opening to Persona Q 2, where he inexplicably starts singing in a woman's voice (well... he's animated singing in a part that's sung by a woman, which is pretty close).

They're pretty great, to be honest.
