Its slowly becomeing one of thoes "Thats a law?" Type things.
Like where I live turtles are illegal, noone cares and most of the police don't know. Its just more anoying to remove then just forget its exsistance.

I totally agree- in a lot of the world it either ISNT the law, or most people look at it askance and are like, is that really the law? It seems weird rather than the norm in so many places, its great. This chapter was also epic :) Her mother didn't stand a chance.

I've got to ask though - turtles are illegal in your country? So like if any land on your beaches you have to escort them to another country?

I just have to imagine some politicians ranting about turtles being unnatural and forcing them into reeducation camps, where they have to decide whether they are lizards or fish; proper animals as God has intended, and nothing else.

... but I'm pretty sure this is about some pet laws or something.

Come to think about it, Arisa would make a great politician. She's already completely uninterested about anything that's not furthering her own agenda.

And Arisa didn't pass out... so that's progress, right?

She would fail miserably due to being way too honest. In the world of politics there is no sin greater than truthfully speaking one's mind.

The inevitable politician-spouse interviews would be a hoot, though:

"This is my wife, Mari, who I want to have sex with but we haven't done it yet!"

And at least her "I don't recall" answers would be truthful enough.

Hokkaido has always been my favorite part of Japan by MILES and its been legal there for quite a while. I believe the entire prefecture. Just saying. Okay just writing that makes me miss Hokkaido again. Next time I am in Japan that's my first stop.

Sure she can. Just watch her!

I have no idea where they live but I know a lot of states in the US actually have some really weird laws that are usually just really old and out of date but had a reason when they were put into effect. Something like turtles being illegal is probably ownership of turtles being illegal due to something regarding local ecosystems or something. Usually they're no longer actually enforced and haven't been repealed simply because so few people know about them and the state legislatures can't be bothered spending the time to repeal them if they do because that time can be better spent doing other things.

Well, as a matter of fact, in the US back in the day baby turtles were a common seasonal novelty item in low-class department stores (what they used to call “5 and 10 cent stores” until they became “dollar stores”). Also baby alligators (of sewer alligator urban legend fame) and, around the Easter holiday, baby chickens (called “peep-peeps”) with their pinfeathers dyed pastel colors.

Of course, these infant animals were almost universally doomed to short, unhappy lives and early deaths, either in the period when the children played with them as if they were toys or after everybody lost interest in them. So at least in the US some laws of this type are the result of someone finally saying, “WTF are you thinking? Stop that!”

I’m actually quite fond of turtles (they tend to be pretty chill companions), but they aren’t completely easy to raise and keep healthy even when you’re committed to taking care of them. They definitely deserve better than being sold as knickknacks for 5-year-olds.

Anyway, I’d argue that there’s more of a rationale for regulating the sale of baby turtles than there is for forbidding gay marriage.

I was starting (okay, not starting, it's been a constant thought throughout) to wonder if Arisa got some brain damage to go along with her amnesia, but she actually pulled off the whole telling Mari's family moment fairly well.

You have no power here Japanese law. Mari's father and brother seem alright with it. Who wouldn't want Arisa in their family?
