So is this just a metaphor for people watching Euphonium, then?

It's a parody. I can see why some people may feel offended. It's presenting stories of lesbian relationships as mainly fodder for. male imagination. Indeed, it's aimed at all of you, male yuri fans, so you can relate.

As for me I'm not offended, but I don't relate at all, so maybe I'll smile, then forget about it.

Feels a lot like its poking fun at shipping as well.

I don't think much about shipping, but shipping REAL people feels really creepy (regardless of the gender of the person shipping them).

Lol, that punch tho! The art is good, im interested in his classmates story for sure, and I grinned when he got KO'd cause yeah he's a bit creepy, but his monologues like that whole short story made me laugh...this might get even more interesting as the story progresses!
Thanks for translating!
Oh and does "Danshi" translate to anything?

I'm in a similar position here it might be offensive to me if i was a guy but since im not that just doesn't affect me, it also causes some of the humour to be lost on me though and im not sure if i like this.

You know, when you are on internet many times you don't see yourself as a man
because we use female avatar and stuff
So sometimes is hard to get sympathiced with the mc

This is a rather overblown parody of male yuri fans, A big in-joke for fans about fans. As such, it can sometimes be more biting than funny. Like, MC shares all the possible traits of male yuri fans, including those used by (not only) female yuri fans as exclusion fuel. It's rarely found in anonymous communities, but sometimes crops up in pseudonymous ones. Female yuri fans (like Mrs. Friedman) exhibiting derogatory attitude about male yuri fans, going as far as calling them "creeps", "losers" and other names, all in effort to insinuate that male fans are not TRUE fans, and not TRUE target audience for TRUE yuri.

Additionally, ire towards this manga may come from it repeating the same joke for too long AND moving in a direction some feel inappropriate for something running in a yuri magazine. I.e. having all yuri developments in it be entirely MC's fantasies, or having girls happily hook up with guys in later chapters. Admittedly, I have no idea what happens in this manga as I didn't read the raws, but judging by first two chapters (i.e premise and it's execution) and the fact about 5 volumes being out, it might heavily be the former.

All in all, combination of biting satire/parody, same joke for too long, and lack of actual yuri developments in a "yuri" manga might be what contributed to such heated reactions from some of /u/'s denizens.

P.S. Five volumes, man, FIVE! That's 3 more than Strawberry Shake Sweet. 3 more than Hanjuku Joushi. 4 volumes more than Ebisu&Hotei.

Not sure how it's offensive as it doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I find it quite amusing.

thats a pretty hilarious logic.

Sheesh... I really don't see this holding up for longer than 3-5 chapters, tbh. The hell is going on in 5 volumes...

The point is not watching the guy orgasm. It's to put yourself in his shoes.

Anyway, this manga is parodying yuri and somehow belittles it by overplaying all the cliches.

It's piling up cliches and attempts to make people laugh at yuri itself.

I don't know how to feel about that.

It's a bit sad, if it's the state of mind in Japan's manga industry about yuri.

Just because there's one mange that parodies yuri in that way doesn't mean that it reflect japan's view on yuri.

And I think the author is more about tipping his hat at the typical male yuri lover with this work that pointing his finger at yuri and mock it.

I'm not too fond of that manga for various reasons, but I don't see it as an attack against yuri or as a sign that yuri hime wants to get away from yuri. It feels more like some private joke to me, actually, with all the name dropping of author, staff and series.

Finally, a yuri manga I can relate to (I am a guy).
For me, love between girls seems more gentle and refined for some reason. I know, that real world lesbians wouldnt agree with this but as with the conventional romance stories, yuri is a reflection of a real world, not its copy.
Sometimes I wish I was born female, so I could expirience girl love myself but oh well, have to carry on with whats given.

That's the one thing that annoys me about this manga. The author said it was a semi-bibliographical work about his life as a yuri fanboy. But why male yuri fans must be seen as creepy guys that hate their gender and constantly gets depressed because most girls are straight, while female yaoi fans can be just...girls that like gay stories.

I am a male yuri fan.
I don't hate myself for being man.
I don't feel guilty about reading fiction about lesbians.
I don't ship girls I know with each other.

Not to say those kind of fans don't exist. I don't even know if they're majority or not. But saying that this manga is a realistic view of all male yuri fans is wrong and misleading, and just contribute to make prejudice agains them higher. The story introduce more male yuri fans later, so maybe one of them will have yuri as a healthy hobby instead? Although, I know one of them is a guy that just like yuri porn, so I'm not counting on it.

Not that I hate the manga. There's a lot of interesting things about it. But I feel like saying it's a realistic view of male yuri fans is too much.

I'll also question how much the author even loves yuri, since he's making this manga for years instead of, you know, making actual yuri. If I could draw, I would never lose too much time with something like Yuri Danshi when there's more interesting stories to make in the genre that would have yuri.

This is so fucking cool. I so see myself in this guy, he's kinda like my 2D brother from another mother. Kinda ashamed of myself, really. But it's interesting to see a yuri manga with the MC being a guy.

Look at that, Yuri Danshi. I was once interested in this series, but after seeing no actual yuri couple within 5 volumes, I gave up. Maybe Yuri Danshi 2 will deliver something? Yep, there's a sequel running in Yuri Hime. And there's even more. There is a yaoi (kuma shock!) spin-off Yuri Danshi-kun (1 Volume), published in BL magazine Gateau (Ichijinsha, publisher of Yuri Hime). So, yeah.

BTW: If anyone is interested, there is a nice article to read on yuricon:
Thoughts on the Representation of Yuri Fandom in Kurata Uso’s Yuri danshi
