A lot of nonsense to untangle in a single chapter, maybe it would make more sense if I better remembered previous chapters but still :P Was that device mentioned in any of the 60+ chapters before that? Because otherwise it feels like it came out of nowhere, Rei was in despair that they had nothing they could do just a couple of chapters back but evidently that whole time they had an ace up their sleeve?

Oh and if your answer begins with "in the novels blahblahblah" then that's the wrong answer, I don't care about them :P

I haven't read the novels, but I hope this is just an adaptation issue. Like "oops, we didn't adapt ANY of that stuff and we don't have room to linger, oh well quick cram everything in at the last possible minute"

It's not a matter of they forgot to adapt something, actually everything after the fight with Lily's alter ego (and a lot of stuff before it too, like Arla getting backstabbed) basically didn't exist. Rei gets sad after the rejection, Manaria gives her a pep talk, and then she goes to the trial, and that's it.

So I think it's more of a result of them trying to add more (because the original was, as I said, maybe over a bit too quickly) and it becoming a bit messy is probably the result of making shit up as they go.
