I'm a bit curious about what their relationship was in the books.
I'm a novel reader! Mannic has it backwards. Quoting the novel:
"She'd fallen in love with a maid and, despite her best efforts to suppress her feelings, ended up having an affair with the woman."
The implication in the following lines of the novel is that the maid left due to the power imbalance; Manaria being a princess and all. The "rape" thing is an invention of the manga which the anime kept, and an odd one as well considering the maid. comes back in act 2. and is mad at rae for the entire act for stealing manaria's attention.
Rae stilll thinks like she is playing a video game in which in order to achieve her objective, everyone and everything is disposable.
Couldn't have put it better.
