To me Yuri is a lesbian umbrella term so I don't agree with the idea of separating the two. Anyway, the twist the end was definitely creepy but I guess not entirely surprising lol
See; that's a perception a lot of people have , especially in the west, but she's right. Yuri refer to a genre. It obviously have ties with lesbians, but the two are, in fact, different things. Of course, some lesbians will like and write yuri, sometimes even putting a realistic spin to it. Or (half-)jokingly refer to real life stuff as "yuri".
Take our definition of yuri here on Dynasty-scans, we have a clear cut "it's yuri if theres are canon wlw" which is good and practical for tagging purpose, but that's not the "real" definition (to the extent that there is such a thing as a real definition for such a thing). A lot of things that we will say are not yuri because they're not explicit enough so it's subtext would just fall into yuri because they do fit in the genre. Meanwhile sometimes women writting manga that aim to be a reaslitic depiction of LGBT will prefer using other terms, sometime to the confusion of reader who don't see a distinction.
Heck i don't remember which manga it was that had people arguing in the comment section of a certain now-defunct manga pirate site that two characters wouldn't get together because the author had say "It wasn't yuri", when to me it was pretty obvious that the author just meant it wasn't in that genre.
I wouldn't use the term Yuri in real life though I do think Yuri manga/anime are lesbian. Where I don't think a story has to be realistic to be gay or lesbian, just as a straight romance that's idealistic and maybe fantastical is still hetero. I just don't think disqualifying a ton of the works on here as lesbian is a good thing to do personally.
The issue isn't that a story that isn't realistic isn't lesbian, many yuri manga will use the L-word even. The point is inversely that the aim of the yuri genre isn't necesarily to say something about lesbians and that depiction of lesbians don't necesarilly fall into the yuri genre. The two have ties, obsviously, "lesbian" is in the lexical field of "Yuri". But the two terms are not synonymous.
And the comparison with het doesn't really work, since...obviousely straight people don't have the same history and het romance don't have the same history as yuri and aren't a specific subgenre, they're just romances (the equivalent would be that lesbian romances are still lesbian romances no matter how idealistic or fantastic they are).
And of course, the whole Yaoi, Bara, Gay Men is a whole other different beast altogether.
