It basically fell out of common knowledge when the modern vampire lore was being made up.

The anime is just as cute and funny as the manga; however, the yuri vibes are more intense. There’s cheek kissing and hand holding in the opening :o

I've seen it go both ways. For instance Harukana Receive was much gayer in the manga, and so was Release the Spice if I remember right. It seems to depend on who is in charge of the production.
