For a second there I thought Maki was jealous of Eri because Eri liked Nico or something. Also since I'm reading on my phone I thought this would be a short fluff story but turns out it's so much longer and deeper than that! Still worth reading at 4 AM.

This is sorta off topic but weird how I was actually having the same conversation with my best friend today because she feels guilty that she didn't stay in contact with an old friend until now and the friend still treats her like normal while she's being awkward. These coincidences always scares me O.O

Given they've clearly been close for years, including frequently staying at her place, and Nico hasn't taken advantage of Maki, I'd say father's trust is well placed.

They are indeed just best friends. It just happens they are of the "Japanese version of Harvest Moon DS Cute" variety.

I think this is like the Yuru Yuri with Sakurako and Himawari after 13 years. The impression I get is they're on the verge of finally confessing. If anything, Nico and Maki are even less mature for their age than Sa-chan and Himako are in their story.
