Damn the art style is sick, it's giving major cyber punk edge runner vibes! (^v^)-b

Edit: Also, the owner really pisses me off. He owns a drag queen bar/club, an environment that should allow queens to explore self-expression, sexuality, and gender identity in whatever glamorous way feels true to them as individuals. Instead, all he seems to care about is whether they’re “girl-like enough,” “sexy enough,” or not a “funny Gay joke character . He’s straight-up sexualizing them and, at the same time, policing and undermining their identities. It’s like he’s trying to impose socially normalized, heteronormative standards onto a community and space that is literally meant to challenge and break those norms. It completely contradicts what drag and queer spaces are supposed to stand for.

Really loving this series so far the character writing is really well-done!!

I think this manga will have some interesting things to say about gender, family, and forgiveness, but honestly the main thing that comes to mind is SLAY QUEEN

Super fun to see a series about drag! Hope it's good

those character designs are just a bit questionable, bordering on rather mean spirited. I hope this manga talks abt how drag houses came from ballroom houses (majority black trans women) because i think that understanding of the history is super necessary 2 how one would go about forming a drag house.

yeeeeeeahh i kinda agree like...there was stuff i liked and i don't think it's badly intentioned but the character designs do feel potentially cruel in places. i'm not writing it off yet though it definitely has my attention

I believe what the author was going for was more of a fishnet body suit. Which I thought was neat asf. Definitely keeping my eye on this series! Loving this first chapter

The owner is a sleezeball. I actually like the art style, and I think this is going to be a fun ride.

I like it. I like the vibes, I like the energy, I appreciate that the situation the MC is in is extremely relatable.

I can see what folks are saying about the artwork, but for me, there was something very familiar about it; it took me a few pages before I was able to place it: Cowboy Bebop. There was one episode which featured a moon of only men, and so, naturally, there were male hookers in drag. They had a similar vibe: as if feminine colours were crudly painted over a masculine form, rather than a harmonious blend which comes naturally from experienced and genuine self-expression. The fact that it reminded me so vividly of some one-off characters from a 25-year-old anime makes me wonder if this is "just another Japan thing"; as if this is that culture's visual shorthand (a trope, essentially) for "drag queen". I've seen manga with more ... for lack of a better term, "natural-looking feminine males", but these were either stories about honest transgenderism, or, the characters were meant to be androgynous as part of the conceit.

Art aside, the set-up and pay-off of "set off the fire extinguishers so no one will know you're crying" is, to me, enough to feel confident that there is going to be a real and honest character drama here. I'll be looking forward to it.

I don't think the character designs are particularly bad. All the cis women are drawn like that too so I think that's just the author's style

The cis women drawn like that are old, the puke lady and her friend don’t have that features, so idk if its comparable.

Why no one talking about how Fifty is a lesbian?? I am glad she has a good relationship with her father
Also, the lady that always shut-up Mariah seems like a real friend, I hope she appears later.
And finally, I think the kid is probably family with the cop.

With the bsky comic we know that Fifty is the only trans woman in there, so it’s kind of sad that she is the one with more strong features, honestly I thought this was the 50s-60s at first, with people in the countryside thinking Lori was a vampire but its modern time. The comic btw is still beautiful, I like how it pokes fun at insensitive tropes about queer people but is still kind of ironic how the author can acknowledge they are harmful and still made Fifty the one with the bigger-strong jaw. Outside of that I am looking forward to this story.

Pretty strong start! I like how the drawing style has a more western comics feel to it, makes it a lot more suitable for a story set in the US.

I don't know why the character designs look so much like caricatures, it doesn't really feel mean spirited (ignorant at the worst) but I'll wait to see what the author does with her characters. It could be interesting if the topic is brought up later on, with some proper nuance.

Huh, I could see this really going either way… godspeed small seemingly nonbinary child on 4chan. Hopefully they sort this out without the cops.

Should Lori still be refered to by she/her outside of drag?

So, the only woman here is Fifty.

The others are cross-dressing men who do it because they want to, and are not women, nor do they want to be.

Their orientation not being mentioned.

^Concerning pronouns, they're absent in Japanese, so it's a translator choice here to refer to Lori as "she", even though we don't know how they identify as.

Weirdly unnecessary to say three times in a different way that they are men, but NO, Fifty being a woman doesn’t mean all the other Queens are men. The author is very open with pride flags in their work, and apparently another trans character (tf, tm or nb is still unknow) appear in future chapters.

I'm going by "The Ruthless Vampire Queen, that's who I'm now", and the fact that she still presents feminine outside work.

Even Fifty doesn't present feminine outside work.

Although I haven't read past volume 1 cause I haven't bought those books yet, so I'll rectify if I have to later.

I like how Lori looks like Marilyn Monroe!
Yep, for example when she got fired she was using heels. Even if she doesn't identify as a woman, a lot of drag queen's still go by she outside of drag. like, even cis gays use she/femenine gendered words for themselves.

Aah, I see. I just assumed Lori was a gay man because of the drag.
