I was thinking about this comment. In US terms, she is like a white woman from Alabama who married an abusive husband right out of high school before being isolated by that husband. She has very little exposure to people different than her, which for a lot of people happens for the first time in college or their careers. She also doesn't have an open or healthy way of relating to herself.

If we imagine someone like this on the run in Thailand, Yuri is doing pretty well in terms of adjusting and being respectful to other people. She has more to learn, but has shown herself willing to do so.

Yeah Yuri was dealt a shitty hand, her world was limited by her abusive husband and the layers of society that expected her to go along with such a marriage. That's also why I wish she'd say "Who gives a fuck about societal expectations and norms", though I know it takes awhile to get to that point. So far Yuri has been pretty rude towards Phu Thuy, and it mostly felt like she agreed to move on and not dwell on things so they could focus on the mission, so I don't know if she has any desire to change. I guess we'll see, I don't hate her it's more that I hope she grows as the story progresses.

This chapter, we do see her realizing she's being hypocritical and questioning if her own standards make more sense than Phu Thuy's. So far she wouldn't admit it out loud, but she's likely to get there with more time.

You are right she was rude. If Phu Thuy was more bothered by it, she would likely moderate herself more. Phu Thay literally invited the sheltered housewife to an orgie. We don't have any instances of someone being seriously uncomfortable with Yuri, but I suspect she would notice and react to it.

Often it's interpreted as judgement or otherwise as a faux pas, even when the person wasn't intending to be. They can then either double down or reflect before deciding how to act in the future.

This is based on my experience living in two non-cosmopolitan but otherwise disparate areas of the US, one where I was viewed as part of the dominant culture and one where I was seen as an outsider.

That's fair I think, I say similar pages since I don't think we're super different in our views. From my understanding you're more forgiving of her behavior, and I'm a bit harsher. Which I do also understand where you're coming from, and I should say I'm not saying she's horrible, only that I hope we do get to see her grow beyond some of her current rigid views.

Very relatable, first thing I put in my travel bag is tissues. That in this situation would still come handy in order to avoid touching directly a shower head that people grab with potentially poopy hands...

I've never wiped with tissues. I do tend to keep a partial roll of toilet paper in my backpack, even in the US, for public bathrooms that are out, or have really shitty inferior paper.

Honestly I don't get the shower head thing...

Ah yes the bum gun, or a makeshift version of it. It is use like a bidet but you have to aim it yourself, it is why Yuri afraid of wetting herself since she not used to it. Also in very rural place you just get the mysterious water tank and water pail (or bucket & cup).

Which if they're caught can possibly mean the death penalty..
