Ming Wei is the pure maiden. The Little Empress is a survivor and a Machiavellian politician. And Tantai Lan is the imperial couple's hatchet woman.

That was an interesting surprise coming from the empress. She knows how things work and is not turning her eyes from the darker aspects of her position.

I mean, I wouldn't say I'm surprised cuz a similar thing happened before way earlier in the manhwa - Dowager's aides were literally hit to death on the orders of the Emperor

Fuck you. Those plots always attract the despicable people who defend torture. Freaking psychopaths.

Hopefully we can go back to the normal story afterwards and leave both this particular plot and the pro-torture comments behind.

The story is always about this kind of thing. It's never shied away from it, and I wouldn't expect it to moving forward. Many political enemies are trying to kill or remove them, and they've shown a willingness to defend themselves in kind. The setting isn't just there for fluff, so it's up to the reader. Unless it's fine so long as it's more in the background? They didn't handle the attendants any better, and that was many chapters ago. I view their willingness as a reflection of the time period and political circumstances.

Her chemistry with Ming Wei is so cute and fluffy

On the one hand, Imperial Chinese governments could be horrible actually.

On the other hand, we have an almost "men not found" situation with a female general (why is the emperor even pretending to be male?) so "historical realism" has been strained a lot already.

There's nothing that says an author can't pick and choose which parts of their world are "historically accurate" for the story. I like that this story doesn't shy away from the crueler parts of society during ancient times and that the main characters aren't perfect always morally right people.

While I commend you on your strong moral stance against torture (which I share, by the way), I'd like to remind everyone that a) this is a work of fiction loosely based on a pre-modern historical setting and that b) discussing a plot point in a fictional story does not automatically endorse it in real life.
