Surely no emotional problems will stem from traveling with the metaphysically shambling corpse of your partner while desperately ignoring their inevitable second death

Glossary was bit superficial, because it's not only the names and surface level details that seem to have affected this manga.

"Aino" is a character in Kalevala who is promised as a wife to old sage Väinömöinen by his brother, Joukahainen, who lost a spell singing contest to him earlier.

However, Aino does not want to get married to such ancient man, so she eventually ends up drowning herself in a lake instead. There's also another source poem for Kalevala where a maiden instead hangs herself.

This could be seen as a fated death, as even a man as powerful as Väinömöinen was not able to stop this from occurring, giving a bit of a parallel here with the mage knowing her beloved will inevitably die and it seems there's nothing she can do about it. However, very last part of that sequence shows that Aino has changed into a fish instead of drowning and so manages to escape her predicament. So it's not all so dark. I'm getting a feeling this story might do something similar in the end.

The art style reminds me of Made in Abyss. I like it a lot already. Feels like there will be another twist down the line

Damn. That happy to WOAH panel change in ch.1 made my heart drop. Very Frieren in origin of a story starting "at journey' end" and I'm so ready for that wholesomeness. Did I say happy though? Oh.. oh no.... I sense sobbing in my future. Drat the yuri curse of death!

Page 138 of chapter 3 dealt lethal damage to my heart.

I would normally be talking about lethal damage too, but I can't help but read the chapter title as "Flower of the North Star" and it's overriding everything else

I definitely agree with the comparison to Marcille. There's that combined with the aftermath aspect of Frieren. Two girls on a journey that mean everything to each other like Girls Last Tour. So a lot of familiar notes that combine into a unique feeling series with this one so far.

I'll also say as someone who loves the manga for Dungeon Meshi and Frieren, I absolutely loved having their anime airing within an adjacent window, partly because there's a lot of parallels between the two. Frieren is about an elf dealing with the loss of her party and the hindsight factor after many years of a long life, and Marcille is an elf early into her life that is on a journey with the party she's afraid of losing. I love that contrast so much.

That campfire flashback makes it look like Iro fancied Aino? Like it's been clear that Iro loves Aino the most in the world, just not how she loves her specifically. I don't really expect the series to answer that, I just can't help but wonder

I'm pretty sure Aino is fully intent on answering that question, what with holding a white flower out to her and declaring that she wouldn't let their experience in the flower dimension just be a dream.

Both funeral AND wedding allusions with the white flowers??? auuuuugh this story is just piling on the heartbreak. Also the two page spread of Iro in the field is stunning, followed closely by Aino laying in them motionless. And the cute dream outfits... really this chapter was just killing it on the visuals

Same, was definitely seeing the flower offering as a continuation of the wedding-esque visuals from 139, both of them also making vows to make each other happy in some way... seems pretty gay
